About this project
This project will definitely take off so I thank everyone who has helped to guarantee that this company will begin playing a vital role in war games terrain across the globe! There is still plenty of time to make contributions and reap rewards while taking advantage of the discounted prices and free U.S./Canada shipping (and discounted international shipping as well).
Stretch Reward #1 Convention Discounts
Tectonic Craft Studios will be attending Origins Game Fair and if we get $12,000 we'll be attending GenCon as well. Any Backers who visit our booth will receive a 10% discount on any purchases at either convention. There will be an additional reward to fulfilling this Stretch Goal but we're keeping it a mystery until it happens!
What we're all about
Tabletop miniatures games are a lot more than just games. Tabletop minis gaming is a hobby of strategy, tactics, modeling, painting, storytelling, dice-rolling, fun-having, and hanging out with your friends. They are as much about spatial relationships as they are personal ones. They're as much about making your army as they are playing and winning with them. As a whole, the tabletop minis hobby is a highly visual one. We spend hours and hours of converting, sculpting, painting, inking, and highlighting to make sure our armies look great.
But what about the battlefields? Isn't it about them too?
How many times have you spent all that time personalizing your army, maybe with friends or at a local gaming store, only to fight an epic battle on a plain grass/wasteland board with a few uninspired hills, drab buildings, and a few generic accent pieces?
Tectonic Craft Studios is looking to change that. We're looking to start making terrain as a continuous and evolving line of tabletop scenery that can grow with and adapt to a constantly growing and changing war games community. War games need high detail, durable, yet affordable terrain that is easily and intuitively assembled to get it built and on the table.
How did this all start?
This whole thing started with an architectural model and a game of warhammer 40k. As an architect by trade, making things is pretty much what I do. Making them look great and stand up as well is pretty much in the bag as well. So this combined with a love or war games and a shameful lack of terrain on the market lead me to start designing some new terrain. And I haven't stopped yet...
So where are we now?
Right now have strong, solid designs for kits (and trays, and tokens, and counters, and objectives, and more) ready to go now and a whole lot more ready to start soon. All we need is the laser cutter. We have found an online, open source laser cutter with more than adequate specs to take care of our terrain needs. We have the mechanical and electrical knowledge to properly engineer and construct the machine. We have people telling us they love our work. We have the passion. We have the inspiration. We have the experience. What we need is you guys.
Why should you support this project?
You should support this project to make terrain an important (and good looking) part of tabletop wargames again. Diversity, durability, ease of assembly, and craftsmanship should all be part of terrain to make our battlefields dynamic and unique.
Furthermore, supporting this project lets you partake in shaping the future of the line. How many terrain companies can boast that? I'm looking to provide terrain to the war gaming community and I'm looking to you guys to help me.
All of this terrain is also discounted from what the prices will be post-kickstarter. They also include free shipping to the U.S. and Canada and discounted shipping overseas. Yes, shipping from me to you- on me.
Remember, Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing deal. So if you find some stuff on here that you like, tell your friends. Chances are there will be something on here they like too. The best way to guarantee that you get your goods is to spread the word and make sure we reach our financial goal.
Where does your support go?
Your support goes towards the most vital (and absent) part of the manufacturing process- The Laser cutter. All of the funds from this kickstarter will go towards purchasing the laser cutter, materials, insurances, acquiring the studio space, and shipping out all of your rewards, obviously.
Yes the rewards! There are many. Such is the nature of how awesome it is to have a laser cutter. I'll be able to make a whole lot of different stuff with it. Which is good, because there's a whole lot of different stuff that can be made (and made cooler) with a laser cutter!
*ADDITIONALLY* If you want to pick up a few of the rewards, please select one of them and make your contribution amount equal to the total of the rewards you want and send me a message mentioning which rewards you'd like. If any of the rewards you are interested have a limit, please make that the reward you select for purposes of (digital) bookkeeping.
Bases! As mentioned in the rewards, there are two different Bases! Rewards, large and small. These bases can be made as blanks, attack/facing arcs etched into them, or patterning (masonry, cobblestone, wood planking, steel tread, and grid plate).
Base Inserts! Similarly patterned to the bases, these pieces are cut out and size to fit inside the lip of round bases or over the top of flat topped bases with beveled edges.
Tokens! This reward is pretty neat because it lets you pick the designs for your tokens so that the set works exactly as you want. The reward comes with 20 tokens that can be made into any combination of over 30 different designs. That way you can have all the different tokens you'd need in the heat of battle.
Movement Trays! So you need to move a bunch of models around at once? If only there were sleek, flat pieces of laser cut wood composite to keep them in formation to move around. Oh wait, yes you can get those there too.
Objective Markers! There are designs themed towards most factions in the major fantasy, sci-fi, and steampunk war and skirmish games.
Battle Accessories! These kits are for visually filling the field as well as offering smaller obstacles for the tabletop. The ones currently ready for manufacture are the Fence Kit, Supply Crates, and Stone Well. The Signs Kit, Sundial, Trenches Kit, Crane, Ammo Crates (5), Devestated Columns Kit, Dais, Altar, Rickety Shack, and Lamp Post kit are all currently in digital design and will be updated on the kickstarter as they progress.
Gaming Aids! All gaming aids are made from laser cut and etched plexiglass of various colors. All tokens selected must be cut from the same color.
Tournament Trays! These trays are great for skirmish games and tournament play. Completely stackable for maximum transport efficiency. Get the rack deal and it comes with an additional rack that fits seamlessly into the top to hold onto dice, counters, templates, measuring tapes, and rule books.
Wreck Markers! These markers are perfect for ruined machines of war. With intrinsic patterning themselves in addition to flat laser cut mangled bits allow you to make flat, easy to move on and over markers for in game wreckage.
Basic Terrain Kits! These kits are your basic durable, high detail, and easy to assemble tabletop terrain. Currently the City Ruins Kit and Administration Ruins Kit are ready for manufacture. The Full Supply Shipment Kit, The Gallows Kit, Defensive Bunker Kit, Smoldering Foundation kit, Docks Kit, Train Car Kit, Railroad Rails kit, Victorious Arch, and Lookout Post Kit are all in the design development phase. Note that kits under development may be delayed in delivery as the design process takes some time. Their progress will be tracked and updated on the kickstarter page.
Deluxe Terrain Kits! These kits are heavy duty, high intensity tabletop terrain. The Wooden Cabin Kit, Stone Tower Kit, Gothic Ruins, and Shattered Basilica Kit are ready for manufacture. Stone Bridge Kit, Industrial Bridge Kit, Forge Kit, Ancient Stair Kit, Lone Parapet Kit, Communications Tower, Portal Gate Kit, and Hideaway Tavern Kit are currently in design development. Note that kits under development may be delayed in delivery as the design process takes some time. Their progress will be tracked and updated on the kickstarter page.
Centerpiece Terrain Kits! There are currently two to choose from: The Fallen Gateway and the Abandoned outpost. The Fallen Gateway is complete and ready for manufacture. The Abandoned outpost is currently still in the design development. It's progress will be tracked in the updates as the kickstarter progresses.
Custom Display Boards! These display boards are heavy duty, highly functional, exceptionally detailed display boards for your army. They Are typically 30" by 20" with terracing and a few in-built structures to show off your models. As this is a custom job with lots of design work involved, the timeline will be a lengthy one. First come, first serve for the designs (when the design time begins for these pieces).
Pushing the Line! This is an exciting aspect of Tectonic Craft that is currently EXCLUSIVE to kickstarter supporters, where you get to give me direct inspirations for the next piece of my line and designate some of the specifications. While we appreciate your inspirations and input, these products and designs are completely owned by Tectonic Craft Studios and made with the intention of bringing customer insight into product design and distribution.
Custom Orders! The Custom Orders are exactly what they sound like- it's one of a kind custom work that's completed to your specifications. It will be one of a kind, though it may draw elements from our library of components and parts of it may be added to the library of components. However, any designs explicit to your ideas and inspirations (heraldry, particular forms or patterning, etc) will not be added.
I have an idea for either a custom piece or a pushing the link kit but am unsure as to what category it fits in. How can I tell which category my idea falls under?
- Objectives are on 25mm or 40mm bases, comprised of 6" square of material and typically take 1 hour or less to design
- Accessories generally take about 12 square inches of material and take between 4 hours of design work.
- Basic Terrain Kits are usually made from 48 square inches of material and take 8 hours of design work.
- Deluxe Terrain Kits are usually made from 60 square inches of material and around 16 hours of design work.
- Centerpiece Terrain Kits are usually made from 1728 square inches of material and around 40 hours of design work.
I play a game that is at a different scale than any of the terrain here, but I have some great ideas for the game. Is there anything I can do with this Kickstarter?
Yes! Send me a message and we can discuss what to do about the situation. We can probably work something out and find an appropriate reward tier to classify it as.
What are the costs of shipping?
US Shipping is included in all rewards! Yes, isn't that awesome!? For shipping to Canada or Europe there are additional costs listed. For shipping elsewhere, please message me and we will figure out an appropriate pricing to get you your goods.
Can I have my shipping expedited?
Yes you can, though I'd have to ask that you cover the difference of costs.
If I need movement trays besides the ones you have listed or for different gaming systems, can I still be a backer?
Yes, the movement trays listed are more time/material guidelines than anything else. If you have something in mind shoot me a message before you make a pledge and we can sort it out from there.
Are there any incentives for getting above and beyond the goal?
Absolutely! There are a number of mystery rewards (whose details will be slowly revealed as they come closer within reach) but some of the ones I can tell you about now are a wider variety of color selection for tokens and templates, increased numbers of custom commissions and pushing the line incentives, and tokens and/or accessories included in donation rewards. More on these to come if and when we surpass our goal.
Can you make direct copies of buildings from movies or games? Can you put icons and logos from my faction or game onto the products?
No. I do not have any copyrights at this time and wish to abide by the Gaming Giants who so graciously make games for us all to enjoy. I can make original designs in any style or flavor as requested so long as it does not break any copyright laws.
How much coffee do you guys typically drink?
More than we ever thought possible when we were kids.
Do the models come assembled or as kits? If not assembled, do they come with directions? How well do they take paint?
The models all come as kits. Assembly is half the fun. They will either come with directions or have downloads available from the website. As for painting, they require either a spray primer or seal coat prior to painting. MDF is a porous material and will dry very quickly and unevenly if not primed or sealed. Otherwise, it's completely fine.
If you have a number of different rewards you'd like to reap, make a donation adequate for both of them combined and select one and send a message indicating the two (or more) rewards you're interested in. If one of them has a limited number (pushing the line or custom commission) then please select that one to keep the math fair-and-square. I'll mark you down for both (or all 3, 4, 5, 12) and that will be that.
