Did you know plastic bottles can take from 400 - 1000 years to decompose!? And it takes 3 times the amount of water to produce a plastic bottle than it does to fill it... this is why we need to be REUSING and RECYCLING them in every way we can...
Introducing Hello Fred... our playmats and change mats use a soft fibre made from plastic bottles that would otherwise end up in landfill!!! Read on to find out more...
What We Are Creating
To start off with, we have chosen 14 beautiful designs done by independent artists from around the world. You can see the designs we've chosen around our logo in the picture above. Each design will be printed onto our chosen fabric with water-based, biodegradable, eco-friendly ink. Using these designs, we will be creating the following:
- Playmats - 105cm round & 75cmX105cm rectangle, 100%cotton twill top, soft, breathable, waterproof bottom, filled with 100% recycled polyester, made from plastic bottles that would otherwise end up in landfill.
>>>>> We hand stuff the playmat inner before taking it to a local upholsterer to get it sewn through, similar to a duvet/doona inner or mattress topper.
>>>>> The cover for the playmat is removable, so you can throw it into the washing machine if need be. It also means you can buy more than one design for your playmat to use while the other is in the wash!
- Change mats - fold up change mats for the nappy bag. One side 100% cotton the other side a waterproof fabric. They are line with 100% recycled polyester batting, made from plastic bottles. There are 2 pockets on the inside to keep a couple of nappies and some wipes, and a "snap" to keep the change mat firmly together.
- Wraps/blankets - 3 types. GOTS certified organic cotton knit, light and airy organic sweet pea muslin, soft and cuddly minky.
>>>> The minky blankets are for the kickstarter only and will not be continued. We are replacing them with a fleecy hemp lined organic cotton knit blanket instead.
- Beanies - "slouchy" style made out of 100% GOTS certified organic cotton knit. Will fit from 3 months old upwards.
- Bibs - Made out of 100% GOTS certified organic cotton knit, with a waterproof back so your baby's top doesn't get wet (a problem I have every single day).
Even our business cards are made from recycled T-shirt off cuts!!!
We will be selling our Hello Fred range from our website (hellofred.com.au) which will be opening next month! We are also hoping to get some of the range stocked in shops around Australia.
We have MANY more ideas in the pipeline, and hope to continuously grow in new ways.
Hello Fred was inspired by the birth of our special daughter/granddaughter. Since the day she was born, her dad has nicknamed her "Fred". Everyday he walks into the house after work, he picks her up and says, "Hello Fred!"
Having a baby has made me realise two things:
- It's great to have beautiful baby things, but the PRACTICALITY of them is even more important.
- I hope to leave my daughters generation with a love and respect for the earth, that has hopefully started to be cleaned up and looked after properly. I want to start contributing to that from now.
We want to bring beautiful and practical products to mums and dads out there, but also do something for the earth at the same time.
What We Hope To Achieve
Each product from Hello Fred is handmade by my business partner (my mum) or by my grandmother! We are originally from South Africa and, growing up, I watched her develop two very successful children's clothing businesses. After many years now it feels like coming home again. It is bringing us both much joy to be able to create products like these, and we hope that it does the same for whoever buys them.
One of the main reasons we have been very particular about what we fill our playmats and change mats with is because we want to go beyond just making a lovely, pretty, practical baby product. If we can create more awareness around recycling and reusing waste in a beautiful, positive way, that will be a massive achievement on it's own.
The great thing about every single product we are making is that the prints we have chosen are supporting independent artists from all over the world. We hope to consistently bring in new prints, and by doing so keep our product line exciting and fresh, and support different artists along the way!
We hope to serve the people and the earth in the best ways we can; with products that are amazing quality that keep both the environment and the people happy.
We CAN'T WAIT to start showing you our beautiful products. Thank you for having faith in us xx
$6000 - Organic sweet pea muslin & bamboo face washers
Reaching this goal will mean we will be able to order the bamboo towelling and start making our bamboo face washers out of the same 14 designs printed onto organic sweet pea muslin.
$7500 - Organic Woollen Booties
If we get to this goal, we will be able to order the beautiful, hand dyed, organic merino fleece wool, and hemp wool, to sooner begin the production of our woollen booties.
**PLEASE NOTE: This image is not necessarily the finished product, but a pair that was quickly knitted for my daughter. The pattern we choose to use may be completely different.**
$10 000 - Meditation cushions
If we get to $10 000 we will sooner be able afford to launch our INCREDIBLE range of meditation cushions!!! The meditation cushions will reveal a whole set of new designs (supporting even MORE independent artists) and allow us to order our crystals to go with each cushion. The meditation cushions are a special item for your child to own, where he/she can sit quietly (even if only for a minute) and take a few deep breaths, or meditate alongside you.
Thank you for creating your beautiful designs:

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge we have found ourselves facing is finding suppliers that feel right to us both ethically and environmentally. We want everything about what we create to be right, but we also want to keep it affordable for people. Balancing this has sometimes been tough. However, we seem to have overcome these challenges through hours and hours of research and countless amounts of emails and we feel we are in a very good place.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
