About

They don't care about making it to the top—they just want to make it to the gig!

Local legends The Fanatical Four are out to save rock-n-roll on threadbare tires, backfires, a broken gas gauge, two chords and the truth.

Driven by a dream and a resourceful roadie, the band must overcome a road of mishap adventure strewn with potholes, speed traps, bypasses, barrels, and bottlenecks—all the while being pursued by their nettlesome nemesis, fiendish hair-metal band Ümph!

Traverse Zont (chauffeur/roadie), Fee (mic), Mill-Dude (bass), Annie (guitar) and Wo (drums) through this trail of tribulation from load-out-to-load-in so they can get to the stage on time and avenge this tried and trite state of rock-n-roll. If not, they'll have to return to their day jobs looking for day jobs . . .

In late summer 2013 a local weekly did a cover story on ClickShake Games and Fresh Games based in my hometown of Columbus, OH. I appreciated the founders' earnestness and levity, along with the fact that FreshGames created "Cubis" and "Ranch Rush" while ClickShake has produced video games for Comedy Central and Sports Illustrated for Kids.

They expressed passion about their work and were direct in their mission for studio gaming development; a professional attitude without all the palaver. Two quotes that really impacted me were, "I think being independent means you have to create opportunities . . . I encourage everyone to be entrepreneurial . . ." and ". . .  [we] want to make games at any cost."

Not long after the article ran I sent an email to ClickShake with a synopsis of BandVann. Their reply was surprisingly prompt, offering suggestions and encouragement, as well as possible interest when financial backing is secured, and of course, depending on schedule availability.

From there, I contacted graphics artist and CCAD graduate Michael Motter, whose dedication and imagination are essential. His drafts were based solely on verbal descriptions and drawn in one or two takes. Furthermore, I believe these images represent a style and look that will transfer well to the appearance and setting of the game's world.

Once funded, it is my intention to present a featured outline (characters, strategy, colorization, vision & design) of BandVann to the teams at ClickShake Games LLC and FreshGames LLC for consent of development and completion. Keeping close to the project is vital to me, so remaining in Columbus is ideal; however, with respect to the demands and schedules of publishers, venturing outside I-270 is always an option.

                                                 Play

The gaming strategy is based on points, timing, and maneuverability. Players will guide Zont (through various stages and advancing levels) in loading equipment and instruments swiftly out of the band garage and into the back of the van while being vigilant not to overlook essential accoutrements. Once this task is complete, the group heads for the highway.

With Zont now at the wheel, player must try to avoid a series of obstacles (potential points/bonus points) while weaving through traffic and eluding the tour bus of their arch rivals, Umph!, whose sole intention is to run the Fanatical Four off the road and steal the show. (The contention stems from a feud dating back to a  middle school talent show.)  At the height of the chase, Umph!'s 4-octave lead vocalist, Gurt, poses in triumph atop the tour bus and unleashes a sustained tire-blowing, glass-shattering caterwaul until the van comes to an exhaustive roadside halt. To counter this offensive, Zont emerges upon the van's roof with a shoulder-mounted hair spray-firing power hose. Player must keep consistent aim at Gart to potentially "freeze" him up until his coiffure cracks to pieces and his wail becomes a whimper. Depending on the outcome of this fierce showdown, The Fanatical Four could get back on the road and race to the gig, or end up back at the garage with Game Over and a Restart option. (And, having to live with the fact that Umph! has stolen their show.)

Once the venue is finally arrived at, The Fanatical Four perform a ten-second original song to an obstreperous crowd that deems victory or defeat with either a moshingly roaring approval, or a chorus of boos, hoos, and aged tomatoes. (Note: Crowd's reaction is based on player's score in accordance with points, bonus points, and time.)

I greatly appreciate your time, interest, support, and potential commitment to this project.

Sincerely with Best Regards to All,

Steven M.

Risks and challenges

The only setback I am preparing for is the schedule of the developer. The time and dedication placed on game production is beyond demanding, and the number of commitments they are involved in could lead to considerable delays. Additionally, the greatest challenge, as with most business ventures, is communication. It is my responsibility to convey the mission of the project clearly from the onset, be professional, honest, and equally important, open-minded. I hope for and look forward to a collaborative effort with a developer who believes in his or her work as much as I do.
