We want to share our unique style and approach to Shakespeare with the world. Help us do it!
::UPDATE 2:: Back by popular demand, we're extending the $100 (TO GO) reward. It's a great package. You get a copy of the video of the production when it's completed, a special "behind the scenes" video, a signed Puppet Romeo & Juliet poster, and our thanks :)
::NOTE TO BACKERS:: Your support means everything to us and we want to offer something for everyone, so we've done our best to accommodate people within our budget if we meet our goal. When applicable, rewards for attending backers are labeled (TO STAY!) and rewards for non attending backers are labeled (TO GO!).
Who we are
Puppet Shakespeare Players is an NYC-based classical theater troupe that seeks to bring Shakespeare's stories to life with a healthy mix of comedy and puppets.
We started as a group of actors fresh out of college, wondering how we could take everything we know and love about Shakespeare and make it accesible. True to Shakespeare, our solution came from thinking outside the box. What better way to present the bawdy humor and rule breaking than adding puppets to the mix? Puppets challenge convention, require us to use our imagination to bring them to life, and underscore humanity by highlighting aspects of a character's personality. And because of our distance from puppets as instruments of storytelling, they make a better mirror for humanity. We think they're perfect for bridging the gap between Shakespeare and modern times.
As much as we adore puppets and comedy, we care just as much about telling the story. Our troupe is grounded in the First Folio technique: a method of acting and reading Shakespeare based on the First Folio texts, which are as close as we can get to what Shakespeare wrote. We analyze the text like a map, looking for clues that inform our artistic choices and connect us to what we believe was Shakespeare's original intent.
The Project and Present Day
This January, we'll present our unique performance of the Bard's beloved tale of teen angst, "Puppet Romeo & Juliet". Our goal is to make a quality video of our upcoming production.
We made our debut in the summer of 2012 with our first show, "Puppet Hamlet". We had great audiences of all ages and lots of positive feedback. People not only enjoyed themselves, they understood the story! We feel great about the impact our performance had, but alas, we weren't able to capture it on film.
We want to do things differently this time and we need your help.

The Bottom Line
We are committed to presenting the best of both Shakespeare and puppetry. The depth and humanity of Shakespeare’s work reminds us that, despite technology and world politics, human nature has not changed. We believe that these plays are entertaining, enlightening and truly awesome, and we strive to bring these aspects out in each of our productions. We want to share our performance with the world.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Risks and challenges we face after reaching our goal:
**We need to get equipment: We need to get cameras and microphones that will bring our performance to life and give us quality footage for editing later on.
**We need to plan our shots: Once we have the equipment, we’ll storyboard, organize the crew and schedule time in the performance space to experiment with ways to get the best shots. We want to make a good video, but above all we need to tell the story. Ideas we have now may not work in practice and we’ll need to figure out what works.
**We need operators: Once we have the equipment and the plan, we need to find qualified people to carry it out. Right now all hands are on the show, so having people who are capable and focused is very important.
**We’ll need to edit: After we have all the footage, we’ll sit down at the end of the run and put it together in a way that makes sense. We want to tell the story and capture the spirit of the live production.
**We roll out the finished product: Reward fulfillment will begin right away, and we’ll sort through who gets what. That will take a little time but we want to make sure you receive the video by the method you chose (DVD or digital download) with no mix-ups. We want to honor the support and generosity you’ve shown us with a hassle free experience.
Yes! We will offer digital downloads of the finished video. We want to make sure we reach as many people as possible, and downloads are a key part of that. If you like, you can let us know your choice when you pledge. In any case, we'll be in touch with all our backers who are owed videos once we complete the project to make sure you receive the option you choose.
