In the summer of 2014 the chance discovery of the first recorded Iron Age bloomery furnace in the Southborough Valley created a lot of local interest. Material from a sealed context in the furnace has been given a radiocarbon date of c.350BC. This would make the bloomery not only the oldest know furnace of its type in Kent, but possibly one of the earliest in Britain.
