About this project
These 1x2 tiles are made from 3mm sheets of high gloss carbon fiber.
@ $10,000 - Reached! When we reach $10,000 in funding we will be adding an extra tile to every backer's order. Thanks for helping us reach our goal and helping us send free tiles!
@ $13,500 - almost there!
When we reach $13,500 in funding we will be adding a second extra tile to every backer's order. Thanks for helping us reach our goal and helping us send more free tiles!
@ $15,000 - to be announced soon!
We are sorting out this goal. Stay tuned.
My boys (Erickson, Ansel and Ellis) and I love to build, create and tinker with LEGO bricks. As they progressed from simple projects to more complex and elaborate kits, we began to think about what sort of accessory we could create that would be super cool. The result of that thinking are these Carbon Fiber Tiles.
Our first task was to find a carbon fiber company that we could partner with. We wanted a team that would give us the advice and guidance we needed and was also excited about the potential of the project. We also had to verify and validate the process, timing, pricing and more.
We received the samples in November. Once we held these pieces in our hands and added them to some of our designs - we thought we might have something special. We think you'll agree that these Carbon Fiber Tiles are brilliant.
We have decided to start with the very versatile 1x2 tile. This tile is made from the instantly recognizable gloss black carbon fiber. There are other colors and finishes for carbon fiber that are interesting, but the gloss black version is the classic - the standard. That is the style that instantly is recognized as mad wicked awesome.
If the universe of LEGO builders thinks that Carbon Fiber Tiles are good enough to see the light of day - by backing this project - then we will expand the selection of tile sizes and materials. We would start by adding 2x2 and 1x4 tiles in high gloss carbon fiber. We are also sorting out the details of machining tiles from aluminum and stainless steel. A future update will contain more details on this.
We've thought about stretch goals and have some ideas; but we'd love to know what our backers think. So join us and let us know what stretch goals you think would be great.
The tiles are 3mm tall and machined from sheets of aerospace grade carbon fiber. These sheets are produced to exacting standards but there can be an 8/1000 inch thickness variation from sheet to sheet. To insure that all your tiles are exactly the same height we make sure that they all come from the same sheet.
These tiles are 100% manufactured in the United States.
The Rest of The Story
As part of this project I have been able to teach my boys a few things about starting a business. We've discussed, researched and planned for all the following:
- shipping to us from production
- shipping to customers
- accounting and cash flow
- pricing strategy
- profit margins
- legal and patents
- target markets
- individual contribution
- websites and e-commerce
- customer support
- returns from customers
- video production for the campaign
- photography of the tiles for the campaign
- setting up a great campaign on kickstarter
- distribution of responsibilities amongst ourselves (still discussing!)
You can imagine that has taken quite a few conversations! The boys now have an understanding of the process required to have a good shot at success. If this campaign fails they will certainly learn from that, but of course our hope is that our efforts at creativity and sorting out all the details to launch a business leads to success. We will know soon!
The boys were inspired by the success of a previous LEGO accessory campaign on Kickststarter for tank tracks. They had massive success and in case you missed it here's a link to the campaign - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/brickmania/brickmania-track-links-custom-add-on-for-the-lego

Risks and challenges
There is an ample source of raw materials and we have a strong, collaborative relationship with the team that will manufacture the tiles. We are therefore confident that we will be able to produce and ship the tiles on schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
