SO, WHAT IS THE AQUARIUM DRIFT ABOUT?
We begin in the seaside town of St. Forget, a crossroads of strange goods and magic items. Meet Jack, a sailor with a poetic heart. His days are full of adventure but his life feels empty. When he hears a rumor about a mysterious serpent that lives in the dangerous Aquarium Drift, he joins a crew of treasure hunters and sets sail hoping to find the best treasure of all; something to fill his lonely heart.

WHAT INSPIRED THE BOOK?
The Aquarium Drift is deeply rooted in the spirit of the classic adventure tale; the ones we loved as kids. I wanted to write about what it feels like to grow out of those stories and finding the bravery to journey out on a new adventure.
The Aquarium Drift is best categorized as a fully illustrated novella, meaning a book that can be read in one sitting. Here are some page samples:
NOW, WHO ARE YOU ANYWAYS?
I'm Ira Marcks, an artist and educator living in Upstate NY. I love building worlds and creating characters to explore them. I like to think that both my art and teaching are gateways for creative people of all ages to approach the world with a sense of exploration and discovery.
BACKER REWARD DETAILS
AVAILABLE IN E-BOOK & AUDIO BOOK!
I want you to enjoy The Aquarium Drift anywhere. I've outputted the book to PDF and EPUB, the most universal e-book format. I think a good tale should be read out loud. So, I got a producer and recorded an audio book too!
LIMITED EDITION RISOGRAPH PRINTS!
'Map of the Known World' and 'The Dark Moon Band' are a pair of illustrations I created while writing The Aquarium Drift. They aren't part of the story but I wanted to share them anyways! Each design is a 11"x17" limited edition RISOGRAPH print on a speckle-tone French Press Paper. RISO printing has found a niche with designers and indie publishers for its old-school mimeograph look. I think it's really cool!
TEACHING TOOLS TO SHARE THE ADVENTURE!
A few of my backer rewards are for the teachers out there. For over 5 years, I've taught visual storytelling in cartooning, graphic design and animation. I want to share my favorite classroom project. I call it OTHER WORLDS, a collaborative drawing project inspired by a sequential art game called a Jam Comic. OTHER WORLDS teaches the fundamentals of telling a good story through visual art and how to share ideas with clarity. Fun (and educational!) for students of all ages.
This short film created during one of my workshops sums up why I love teaching visual storytelling:
Additional backer rewards include a GRAB BAG of fun stuff I've made:

Risks and challenges
In 2012 I successfully completed a Kickstarter for Witch Knots, a graphic novel. The book was released in a timely manner and backer feedback was very positive. I found a supportive community through the project and couldn't wait to give them something new!
Cut to Fall, 2014- My book, The Aquarium Drift is finished and ready to head off to the printer. This will be my second time publishing a book with Kickstarter. Like before, my project is about creating a beautiful, hardcover book and sharing my art. High quality publishing is a tough investment for a working artist to take on alone. I'm looking to the Kickstarter community to support the printing costs and spread the word about The Aquarium Drift! I am connected with a well regarded art book printer (Print Ninja in Chicago) who has estimated a shipping date based on the conclusion of my Kickstarter.
Of course, delays in the printing and shipping process are possible. I have done all I can to streamline this project and I am working with professionals I can trust. If all goes according to plan, you will have all your rewards in time for the holidays!
