B1un7's been attending DEF CON since year 10 and has seen all  the electronic wearable badges since their inception from 1057.  Like most of us, he was completely taken by not only their ability to be hacked on, but by their majestic beauty as well.  Inspired by Whiskey Pirates badges for the last few years, he took it upon himself to create a badge like no other; one that would  fly! For a year he enveloped himself in the creation of his first badge, the DEF CON 25 Friends of B1un7 Flying Skull.  During this silver anniversary celebration b1un7 created just 25 of these amazing badges, given only to his closest friends, mentors, and those that inspired him through those years prior of cons.

But knowing that desire to own a badge such as this, it broke b1un7's heart when he was unable to fulfill those requests by so many amazing hackers who desired the same...

So this year, b1un7 has dedicated his time and efforts to bring this flying badge to all those that wanted one last year!!!

DEF CON 26 Flying Quadcopter Skull

This year's badge is truly a thing of beauty! Having taken all he learned from creating last year's badge, improving upon the design, making it more versatile in the types of Flight Control Units (FCUs) it can be flown with, it has evolved into something more, something exciting!

New Badge in its Design Phase
New Badge in its Design Phase

At it's core, the badge has been designed to allow anyone to program it simply with the Arduino programming application because at it's heart is a custom designed Arduino Leonardo with an ATmega32U4 at its core.

Design Phase
Design Phase

That includes its ability to be run at 5 V from a power source of 7-12 V, running at  16 MHz with 12 analog inputs,  20/ digital IOs (7 of which support PWM), a KB of EEPROM nonvolatile memory, 2.5 KB of SRAM and  32 KB of flash storage, all accessible via a Micro USB port!

Built onto the badge is 16 RGB individually programmable LEDs (WS2812b), an external Piezo SMD Buzzer Audio Transducer Acoustic Component (KLJ-1325), with 6 built in switches (accessable as the Skull's teeth).

NEW Custom Flight Control Unit (FCU) Socket and FCU Mounting Board was designed this year, made to accept not only last year's FCU but any standard 30mm brushed motor FCU!!!   This allows for a whole new flying experience!  Bring your own favorite Betaflight FCU for example!  This also allows you to use your favorite transmitter as well!

PLEASE NOTE:
1) This is NOT the official DEFCON badge that will get you into the conference.  This is an indi-badge strictly for fun and showing off your 1337-n3$$.
2) By pledging for this reward, you agree that you understand this badge is for display only and should never be flown by anyone anywhere!  IF you do fly it, don't fly around people (*these things can cause someone to lose an eye!).  IF you fly it around people, crash and hurt someone, get your @$$ kicked, sued, or leads to your getting married, a professional job, or any other event that could be considered negative, you have agreed by pledging not to hold b1un7 responsible or accountable for your foolhardiry or actions.  Sold as-is with no warranty explicit or implied.

Battery not included, nor is the LCD screen for the eyes.

For the battery, you need need to supply 5-12v (such as 4 AA or a 9v) or a LIPO battery as mentioned below.

Note: This reward does NOT include the additional parts required to make it fly.

In addition to this PCB board, to create a quadcopter, you will need the following items:

  • 1) Flight Control Unit (FCU) Mounting Board & required header long pin sockets

Where We Are as of the Start of this KickStater

As of the creation and publishing of this KickStarter, b1un7's team is into its second prototype design, with the first on already tested and shown to have a working Arduino Leonardo , programmable via the Micro USB (that's already better then last year)!  The RGB ws2812 RGBs have been tested and are working as well!  Weight has been dropped and we have had successful trials with a fully assembled bare badge with the 2S LIPO battery.  We are still determining the final optimal weight, including battery, for best performance.  We have also redesigned the flight controller daughter board to accept a variety of industry standard flight controllers, a big upgrade from last year's use of a single flight control unit.  Additional prototypes will be created before the end of the Kickstarter and all units ordered upon the closing of the campaign to ensure the a successful timeline (even before funding arrives).

Stretch Goals!

Let’s set some stretch goals...

$18,000 - Choice of color for the badge!  Not just white, how about blue, or red, or black!

$19,000 - Hacking Shield!  An Arduino shield to hack on!

Risks and challenges

As always, there is a risk that things will not go as planned. I will do everything within my powers to make sure this project goes off without a hitch! That said, there may be issues such as:
- delayed delivery from production and assembly house
- problems with production, not meeting specified standards or design
- Laser cutter dies
- Natural disasters
- any number of things

If, for some unknown reason, delays are experienced, products defective, I will take the time to make things right! My goal is your satisfaction and enjoyment!
