How Richard Prince got into photography
This is a quote of my exclusive interbiew with famous Richard Prince. He explains, how he became a photographer:
"I didn´t really know how or why I was using the camera, so I started writing about the medium and trying to explain to myself what I was doing.
I was trying to understand. And in the writing and in the taking it just evolved into this new type of photography, which I called "rephotography". I didn´t know what else to call it. It was all about the idea of making something not new, but making it again.
I was working at the magazine. And the magazine was starting to just do things on computer.
The images I was interested in were advertising images and they were very much art directed. They didn´t look like they were made by an artist. But I did know there was someone behind them in the making of them, but I didn´t know who. And I didn´t really care.
All I knew is that they looked really unreal, they looked movielike, they looked cinematic. But in fact they were mostly art-directed. They had a team involved in making them.
So I decided at the end of the day to use them instead of ripping them out in the page of the magazine and pasting them which was collage, I took my camera and made a photograph of them and that was the difference."
