About

Introduction:

Invisible Barn, our entry for 2014 Folly competition co-sponsored by Architectural League of New York and Socrates Sculpture Park, was selected as a notable entry. Although Invisible Barn was not selected as a winning entry, we have been given an opportunity to build our unrealized project with the support of the Sagehen Creek Field Station. With your help, we will be able to give Invisible Barn a new permanent home at the Sagehen Creek Field Station.

Sagehen Creek Field Station is a research and education facility of UC Berkeley. Sagehen is embedded within the 9000-acre Sagehen Experimental Forest, in the iconic Sierra Nevada Mountains north of Lake Tahoe. Sagehen provides researchers the opportunity to build on its 60-year dataset that covers all aspects of the ecosystem; from fisheries and wildlife, to forestry, hydrology and climate change. Sagehen has been interested in creating a long-term, science-based, policy-bending artwork, that bridges science, society, art and architecture. Invisible Barn will function as the ‘bridge’ by providing a human-scale entrance that evokes us to question about what it means for humans to be embedded in the environment.

Invisible Barn:

Invisible Barn is a site-specific design proposal that re-contextualizes the landscape of the Sagehen Creek Field Station by projecting the landscape on to the structure.  A barn shaped-wooden structure is sheeted with reflective film on its surfaces. This mirror-finished folly is placed in the middle of the grove and reflects its surrounding environment: different species of trees and plants, sky, ground and the seasonal changes of the site. The reflection of the folly within its enclosed grove allows the structure to smoothly assimilate into the nature. The incisions that penetrate through the folly allow visitors to maneuver in, out, and around the structure. Invisible Barn is a folly that loses its man-made architectural presence in nature but adds novel experience and interaction to the users.

Invisible Barn is placed in the core of the grove at the Sagehen Creek Field Station. Around the circumference of the grove there are a dozen of birch trees in similar size and equal spacing from one another. Due to the similarity of its size and placement of the trees, the projection on the mirrored surface is similar to what people would see without the folly. The visual illusion that blurs the perceptual boundary between the folly and the site, allows the folly to disappear into the nature, reconstructing the landscape of the site.

The barn is shaped thin and long to elude the dense trees. The beveled folly has openings with various sizes and depths that connote windows and doors. These solid and void on the folly’s envelope, reflective film and plywood-framed opening, accentuate the openings. This creates a visual illusion that makes the framed openings appear afloat. Through these apertures, visitors perceive the subtle differences between the real and the mirrored landscape. The apertures may suggest viewing frames, passages, and benches and visitors are invited to interact physically and visually with them.

To avoid birds from colliding to the structure, we will be using aluminized polyester film which has more than 90% of UV reflectivity in the range of 200-400nm wavelength. This specific UV reflection can be recognized by birds but not by humans.

At the intersections between sculpture and architecture, Invisible Barn loses its architectural shape in nature but encourages visitors to interact with it through overlapping in materials and building techniques between the two disciplines. As a static structure, the folly uses its materiality and the site context to draw a new scene derived from the existing landscape. As people begin to move away, toward and within the folly, the users will slowly recognize a space within the grove that reflects, mirrors, and animates the landscape of the forest.

Goal:

We seek to raise $10,000 from our Kickstarter campaign. 10k is the desired amount we need to raise to get this project built. Although the Sagehen is providing us with tools and accommodation, all of our funding will be coming from the Kickstarter campaign. The money raised will be used to cover test-mockups, construction materials, documentation, logistical cost and traveling cost for the crew. With your contribution, we will be able to give Invisible Barn a new home in the Sagehen Creek Field Station.

Risks and challenges

Since the team has to travel from East to West to construct the structure for 2 weeks, we are on a tight schedule. We are aware that 10K might not be able to cover additional flights so we will prepare to make sure that the construction be completed by the expected date. We will communicate with our CA based friends to resolve any problems of the project without extra flights.
