About this project
2012, Sacred Spaces Village will engage the Fertility theme through the lens of Alchemy. At the core of the alchemical process lies the journey to unite with one’s higher self and give birth to a unified integrated being. We create temples that facilitate this fertile process of internal transmutation and re-birth for playa participants. We've assembled an amazing group of co-creators and are busy rockin’ it. We know there are lots of Burning Man projects doing fundraising right now and many are totally awesome! One of the main reasons to fund our project is that we're not a new group. We've been doing large visionary art temple installations for the last four years on the playa (primarily on the Esplanade) and have tons of experience crafting and building large visionary art temples. You will get to see this vision live and in person in this highly interactive, charged Sanctuary on the playa.
:::: ENTRANCE TO THE TEMPLE::::
The temple opens with our beautiful entrance structure from last year that features a woman and man reaching toward each other and the sky. For 2012, we’re working to update that base with 3D elements made from wood and recycled foam forming a multi-tiered 3D performance stage of people helping each other ascend to the sky and a beautiful mural background. We also have a visionary art tunnel that is lit by color-changing lights people can walkthrough to enter our courtyard. We have built 8 custom fire torches/cannons to line our entrance and a large egg-shaped aerial rig lit by soft lights for performers. We will be showcasing headlining acts such as Phutureprimitive, Desert Dwellers, etc during the evening and having a nightly fire, circus, and aerial show. We will also have several mini shows throughout the day.
We also feature the Sensory Exaltation tank which is a converted sensory deprivation tank to give playa participants a quiet and centered space away from burning man. We provide a fully dark and comfortable experience for you to be whisked away by binaural beats with our light-and-sound machine!
:::: COURTYARD ::::
We have a beautiful courtyard of dancing sculpture people. At the center of the courtyard is a tall fire-water sculpture of the tree of life with a central holy grail from which the water flows. Overhead and standing 25 feet tall and over 100x100 feet is a breath-taking air mandala sculpture of multi-layered colorful tiers of architectural fabric from the visionaries at Guildworks. The Mandala provides shade for large scale events in the courtyard, our yoga and ecstatic dance floor, and our visionary art temple domes. The Guildworks installation provide an immersive projection environment that we intend to rock with 10 projectors and professional lighting gear, taking you on a completely otherworldly journey. In addition we have a professional ecstatic dance/yoga stage that people can play on.
Surrounding the courtyard are large-scale 3D Fractal Mandalas with 3D glasses available and specialized lighting effects for meditation and inspiration. Our courtyard is home to yoga, ecstatic dance, ritual, movement play, circus workshops, and outdoor silent meditation activities throughout the day and evening.
:::: TEMPLE COMPLEX ::::
Four visionary art temple domes with 10×10 entrances set up in a circle fuel the creative current of the central courtyard. These temple spaces are each dedicated to one of the four stages of alchemy: Nigredo(death and transformation), Albedo (Surrender and Intuition), Citrinas(Ecstasy and Union), and Rubedo (Fertility and Re-birth). Each space is the home to an epic collaboration of over 45 visionary artists displaying work, interactive alchemical exhibits, and altar installations. Participants can travel the four domes and walk through the alchemical process. The Alchemeyez Visionary Arts Congress and Ecoartopia are curating these spaces with professional gallery lighting and we expect it to be our best art show yet. The spaces are used in our day-time workshop series where we are providing over 100 individual events through Burning Man and as Sanctuary and interactive art space in the evenings.
:::: MAGNUM OPUS ::::
At the end of the journey through personal individuation, we invite the enlightened incarnate gods to gather in our grand hall to explore a vision of a unified and harmonized future world. The artistic theme of this space is fertility and birthing the new world. We’ll engage that theme aesthetically through garden imagery, bees, butterflies. We are also exploring the notion of interdependency as we birth this world through interlocking/connective designs across the world such as celtic knots, hindu yantras, and dream catchers. The grand hall is adorned with Arabian-styled low couches on the fringes, mandala round tables, pillows and cushions and a performance/acoustic and ambient music stage. In the morning we will be hosting coffee and in the late nights tea. During the day we host yoga, large workshops, and acoustic music performance on our indoor stage.
:::: BUDGET :::::
About 80% of the project is self-funded. We're looking to raise between 5-7k to complete all our projects and make sure it’s dazzling on the playa. The figures are for material costs alone; all labor is volunteer. 100% of the funds raised will go to producing epic art through a volunteer labor of love and insanity; we want to gift the playa community. There is no pass-through of camp infrastructure costs.
We hope the playa community gives an opportunity to rock it by supporting us in this project. We've been working on it since before the ticket crisis and don't intend to let it go just because there was a massive spring ticket whiteout. Burn hard, burn strong. the Sacred Spaces Crew.
