About

Voices in a Jailhouse is an 80-minute documentary that takes a critical look at the Prison Industrial Complex. One hundred and fifty years after the abolition of slavery, private prison companies like Correctional Corporation of America (CCA), GEO Group, and Avalon Correctional Services continue to profit from the incarceration of the poor and people of color, capitalizing on political connections to turn millions of inmates into modern day slaves.

Utilizing investigative journalism techniques, in-depth interviews, and a filmic approach, Voices in a Jailhouse chronicles the often heartbreaking stories of victims and follows dedicated activists in their quest to reform America’s broken prison system. The film’s stories serve as compelling examples of the failed War on Drugs, biased law enforcement, and excessive sentencing, and illustrate how private prisons create cruel, unsafe conditions while manipulating the system and costing taxpayers billions of dollars.

The film investigates the connections between CCA and other private prison profiteers, politicians, and ALEC, an organization that has spearheaded a relentless assault on minorities, women, and our poorest citizens, writing “model bills” that feed the Prison Industrial Complex by lengthening prison sentences, criminalizing immigrants, and expanding the war on drugs.

The Money:

Money raised from this Kickstarter project will go towards editing and shooting additional interviews and action scenes to complete the film. If we surpass our initial goal, we will shoot for our secondary goal of $30,000 to get us through post-production, or our ultimate pie-in-the-sky goal of $45,000 to acquire rights to music and to cover initial costs of pressing DVDs and entering film festivals.

Distribution/Promotion:

Voices in a Jailhouse has already received a great deal of pre-production buzz. Brittney Shantel Guest was recently awarded OU's prestigious Creativity in Motion Award for her contributions to the film, along with $10,000 to be dedicated towards the completion of the movie.

The primary initial exhibition of this documentary will be the international film festival circuit, along with special screenings across the United States targeted at social/political activist organizations, women’s rights groups, and prison reform organizations. Voices in a Jailhouse intends to sign domestic and international distribution deals through GoDigital or another reputable film distribution company or major film studio that will market the film worldwide through iTunes, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Vudu, Fandor, DISH, and Avail-TVN, so that Voices in a Jailhouse can achieve worldwide promotional support and release in DVD and online streaming formats.

As activists, our goal is to positively affect the lives of the individuals portrayed in the film and their families, and on a broader level, to be the catalyst for reform of our prison systems by bringing awareness to the problem of private prisons and mass incarceration.

The Process:

At this time, we have filmed 13 interviews and over 100 hours of video footage for Voices in a Jailhouse. We have completed approximately 70% of filming, and have already begun the long and arduous process of writing and editing the film. The film crew has interviewed Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, Oklahoma Senator Constance Johnson, and experts such as Judith Greene of Justice Strategies in Washington, DC, Carl Takei of the National ACLU, Alex Friedmann of Prison Legal News, as well as telling the victim's stories through interviews with those involved in the stories, their loved ones, and attorneys.

About the Filmmakers:

Taking different paths as lifelong activists, artists, and filmmakers, Brittney Shantel Guest and Mark Faulk joined forces at Occupy OKC in 2011, organizing, executing, and filming actions, several of which made national and international news. It was their mutual passion and dedication to social justice issues that led them to work together on Voices in a Jailhouse.

Risks and challenges

As with all projects, there are inherent challenges. However, as lifelong activists and accomplished filmmakers, we are dedicated to completing this film and promoting it in a way that will help reform drug laws and affect positive change in our prison systems.
