The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded annually by the Swedish Academy to authors for their outstanding contributions in the literary field.
This year, however, due to sexual assault and power abuse scandals in the Swedish Academy, the Nobel Committee has decided to cancel the prize.
In a time when human values are increasingly being called into question, literature becomes the counterforce of oppression and a code of silence. It is now more important than ever that the world’s greatest literary prize should be awarded.
The New Academy was founded to warrant that an international literary prize will be awarded in 2018, but also as a reminder that literature should be associated with democracy, openness, empathy and respect.
The initiative has already been covered by respected publishing houses/publications like The New York Times, The Guardian, Le Monde, Al Dia, and Indian Times, among others.
Thousands of people all over the world have voted.
Now, we need your support to host a Gala Dinner and Prize Ceremony on December 9, 2018.
You can contribute as little as $5 and up to $1,000. If you wish to contribute more than that, we welcome you to contact us to discuss sponsorship options.
Risks and challenges
This project started with the simple idea that literature should be associated with democracy, openness, empathy and respect.
We want The New Prize in Literature to be a recognition of great literature and the result of a joint contribution from everyone who shares our vision, rather than just a large sum of money (the “real” Nobel Prize is on $1M).
Therefore, we have set the target to SEK 250,000, a sizeable but achievable sum, which will go towards making The New Prize in Literature a memorable mark on the literary scene.
And no matter what, we will award The New Prize in Literature to a worthy winner on December 9, 2018Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
