Strong Female Protagonist is the story of Alison Green, a middle-class American with super-strength, invincibility, and a crippling sense of social injustice. In the book we're producing with this Kickstarter, Alison investigates a string of murders, encounters a mysterious figure from her past, and tries to make a difference in a world where the problems are much bigger and more complex than simply punching supervillains.
SFP is a webcomic written by Brennan Lee Mulligan and drawn by Molly Ostertag, and has updated twice weekly online since 2012. You can read all six chapters for free at www.strongfemaleprotagonist.com!
We've done this before! In the summer of 2014 we successfully Kickstarted the first volume (chapters 1 - 4), raising $60,974 from 1,967 backers, and producing a beautiful graphic novel. Bringing the first book of Strong Female Protagonist to print made it easier to share with others, brought in new readers, and helped us to continue making the webcomic.
With this Kickstarter, we hope to publish the fifth and sixth chapters (300+ pages), as well as bonus content, in a full color paperback volume. Strong Female Protagonist is and has always been a labor of love, and Kickstarter is the perfect platform for us to fund this book. We are both artists and paying printing costs up front is not an option - we need you, readers old and new, to take SFP from the web to the printed page.
If you're a fan but can't contribute financially, we really appreciate when readers spread the word about the comic and this Kickstarter! We don't advertise anywhere, so the only way people can find us is through word of mouth.
Alison Green used to be a superhero. With her seemingly unlimited strength and invulnerability, she was one of the most powerful around, fighting crime with other teenagers under the alter ego Mega Girl. All that changed after an encounter with Menace, her mind-reading arch enemy, who showed her evidence of a sinister conspiracy that made battling giant robots seem suddenly unimportant.
Menace retired and the remaining supervillains were put behind bars, and left with no one to fight, Alison unmasked herself on national television. Now she's going to college in New York City, trying to find ways to actually help the world while making friends and getting to class on time. It's impossible to escape the past, however, and trouble comes in the form of mysterious murders, ex-teammates with a grudge, robots with a strange sense of humor, an inconvenient crush, a cantankerous professor, and many different kinds of people who think they know the best way to be a hero.
Brennan Lee Mulligan (@BrennanLM) is a screenwriter and house improviser at the Upright Citizen's Brigade theatre. Molly Ostertag (@MollyOstertag) is a cartoonist, illustrator, and SVA graduate, with books coming out from First Second and Scholastic. We met at a LARP camp when we were teenagers and have been creatively collaborating ever since. We started Strong Female Protagonist because we both wanted to make a story that portrayed a female protagonist in a way we felt was missing from mainstream media. Also, we wanted an excuse to spend hours discussing the mechanics of how an invulnerable person would get her hair cut!
We're partnering with Topatoco and Make That Thing to fulfill this Kickstarter to make sure shipping goes smoothly and efficiently. They're total pros and we're excited about working together!
We partnered with Top Shelf/IDW Publishing to distribute Volume 1, and we'll be doing the same for Volume 2, so in 2018 this book will find its way into bookstores everywhere! (Kickstarter backers will get it first, though)
All rewards include US shipping costs. There are additional costs for outside the US, which we've tried to make as low as possible.
Here's what you can get with each reward tier! We can't do add-ons to rewards tiers, EXCEPT for people getting customized books - if you pledged to get a customized book and would also like a pin, tote bag, etc, please send me a private message.
Over the past four years, Strong Female Protagonist has grown in ways we couldn't imagine thanks to our readers' support, both through Kickstarter and word of mouth. Here's what some cool people have said about our comic:
"What could be a gimmicky setup rises far beyond cliche, bringing new questions about vigilantism, justice, and heroics to the field ... Humor is hard to get right, but humor with a serious message is even harder. Mulligan and Ostertag's creation strikes just the right balance. It's super."
-Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing
"Strong Female Protagonist ... is the perfect superhero comic for people who aren’t really interested in the superhero genre. Actually, it’s also a pretty perfect comic for people who are interested in superheroes."
-Mey Rude, Autostraddle.com
"Brennan Lee Mulligan and Molly Ostertag ... deliberately shatter some stereotypes with a story of their own—a story about a young woman who is strong in every sense of the word."
-Joshua Rivera, Entertainment Weekly
"A smartly written and emotional exploration of the morality of superheroes."
-Lauren Davis, io9
"Over the four-plus years that SFP has been running, both Alison and the comic have grown and developed in complex and remarkable ways."
-Charlotte Reber, Book Riot
Thanks so much for reading!

Risks and challenges
This campaign is a safe bet! We've done this before - our previous Kickstarter funded in the first day, and we fulfilled our rewards on time. All contents for the book are already drawn - we just need your help to go to print. We're doing fulfillment with Topatoco's Make That Thing (www.makethatthing.com), who have a ton of experience producing merchandise, shipping, and fulfilling crowdfunding campaigns. We're printing the books with Print Ninja, who we worked with for the first book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
