I'm trying to raise funds to help with editing costs, publishing, marketing, extra copies for book signings, and an enhancement on the cover for the paperback format.
I have been working on my novel "A Riff of His Own" for over 10 years now, it is my first full-length novel.
What is "A Riff of His Own"?
Most of you, I'm sure, recall the Kerouac classic, "On the Road"; well, imagine it set in modern day times, a little tamed down, and taking place in Chicago and northern Indiana. "A Riff of His Own" follows a young musician, Billy Matthews, as he tries to make his up through the underground music scene while trying not to lose his faith and identity in the process.
You can expect to see a headstrong character as Billy going through trials and tests of dedication to his dream, yet you will also see a compassionate man as he consoles those around him as they count on Billy for help even in the worst of times.
If you enjoy books where you get to see the character grow and evolve for the better right before your eyes, then you'll enjoy "A Riff of His Own".
Help me to spread the word about this project and make this novel a reality for 2012. I am looking to make this novel available as an e-book, paperback, and also an audio-book. I appreciate any help you can give and your word of mouth on this campaign is also appreciated.
I thoroughly appreciate your help.
Make a Successful Launch for a First-time Novel
One major need for funding to make my novel "A Riff of His Own" successful is marketing. Nobody can buy my book if they don't even know it's out there. This is probably the main reason so many other books don't make it high on a sellers list, because they couldn't get the word out on it. A majority of the funding raised here on Kickstarter for my project will go to marketing and promotion, making readers aware of "A Riff of His Own" and therefore increasing the potential sales for it immensely. A portion of the funds will also go towards the cost of editing, cover design work, and a few other details to get the book professionally ready for market. Your help increases the chances for it's success.
Excerpt From "A Riff of His Own"
Jim wringed his hands together and looked
up at me. I asked him, “You going be okay?”
In a solemn, care-worn voice he replied,
“Ya, I’ll be okay. If you want to go out for drinks later, I might be up for
I caught the hint. “Okay, I’ll call you
around seven. Look around the house for that ‘thingamajig’. Maybe if you find
it we could take it back.” I left wondering if I could be held liable myself
for any of this. I was contemplating what Cody would do next. I felt that
perhaps the time was nearing itself to abandon this ship. Jim was sure to be
considering the same thought. Maybe I’ll talk to him about that tonight.
We met earlier than planned simply
because the both of us were extremely concerned of just how far Cody might go
with this growing criminal behavior. First
it was just selling pot, then that grew into cocaine, he lied about business
deals that could’ve gotten him and us
in a lot of trouble had the other party wanted to do anything like press
charges, but luckily they never did, and now…he was just flat out stealing
high-dollar sound equipment. We didn’t want to go down with him if he was ever
caught. We cherished our freedom and only wanted to play music and become great
in the twilight glowing of our lives. Not once did we dream of becoming thieves
or drug dealers, but…here we were.
Jim was swigging a whiskey shot back when
a face of deep worry overcame him. It emanated strongly from around his eyes.
He sat there appearing very troubled. I sat there, too. He was building the
courage to say something. “I’m moving out. If he continues to keep this
nonsense up, I’m moving out. I’ve had it, man, I really mean it this time. What
do you say? Let’s get a place, you and me and get back to what we originally
set out to do.”
More Books Planned for 2012
I am currently working on other projects as well as I wait on "A Riff of His Own" to get back in my hands to make editorial changes. I am currently writing a werewolf-based trilogy with a twist I think will make many of you think to yourself, "That J.W. Holmes guy comes up with some pretty neat story ideas." or perhaps, "I'm surprised a story like that hasn't been written already...it's obvious genius!" Haha, of course I'm joking...kind of.
I am also working on a science-fiction book that is also being developed into a comic book series launching late summer/early fall. We'll be running a campaign on Kickstarter for that one as well if we haven't launched it already.
I am also engaged in a mystery/detective series with the first of to come out this fall. All in all, I am looking to complete at least 7 more books before years end. So when I say "Help!" I really mean it! :) I am working very hard to push out the best books I can for you and other readers and really need your help making my first novel here a great success to pave the road for my other books coming out behind it. Thanks again.
