The Platinum Loop is an 8-minute short film adapted from the novel of the same name by Austin Williams.

The setting: Las Vegas, circa 1973. In a greasy spoon diner downtown, two men hatch a plot to make movie history—and we have a ringside seat for the action. Both humorous and tense, The Platinum Loop takes us deep into the glitter and the grime of Sin City’s now-vanished past.

Three lively characters inhabit this world:

Gene Hoffman is a down-on-his luck movie producer desperate to raise money for a project that will finally put him on the map after years of toiling in the gritty depths of low-budget filmmaking.

Floyd Manning is either a half-crazy con man or a respected peddler of rarefied Hollywood memorabilia. Gene can’t quite decide which description fits Floyd better, especially when Floyd pitches him on the opportunity to partake in a scheme involving the holy grail of lurid Tinsel Town lore: an 8mm black & white film loop purported to show none other than Marilyn Monroe in a highly compromising position.

Pamela is a world-weary waitress who’s been slaving at this particular diner far too long, and has seen Floyd pull his silver-tongued shtick on potential “marks” one time too many. She may play a decisive role in how it all goes down.

This unlikely trio spars over coffee and unfiltered Camels as the sun rises and the clock on Floyd’s offer ticks down to zero. Who will come out on top? We’re making this film to answer that very question.

Risks and challenges

Shooting in Los Angeles offers the benefit of access to a wealth of great talent, but certain hard costs present challenges to low-budget filmmakers. The main purpose for the funds we seek with this campaign will be covering the costs required to shoot on location. We considered the option of using a sound stage, but we need a genuine vintage diner to create a rich visual texture that captures Las Vegas in the '70s.

This 8-minute short is the first step in a much larger process, with the final goal being a full-length feature that tells the entire story contained in the novel. One scene at a time, we aim to build a compelling movie that blends the best elements of film noir, action comedy, and suspense.
