Stretch goal: $5,000 = hardcover books, a small PR tour, and the artwork has already been started for a sequel.

“Ellia and Sunrise” is a humorous and inspirational children's story of a young elephant that gets separated from her herd in the jungle.   With the help of a magical fairy, she learns to find her own way and to be herself; in doing so she changes the destiny of the herd forever.  The story was first dictated by my seven-year-old daughter to her stuffed animals at bedtime.  I wrote it down later and crafted it, and at this critical time, I feel compelled to take my twenty years of experience as a filmmaker, storyteller and illustrator, and make my longtime dream of being a children's book author and illustrator a reality with my daughter as the co-author.   The writing of the story is heartfelt and basic, 1-3 sentences per page in the early reader family model for children's books.  When our young elephant gets separated from the herd, she says, "I want to be as good and fast as my brothers, sisters and friends." "Ah," said the fairy Sunrise.  "I think you might be trying too hard to do what other people like. And things are not going the way that you like.  Just be yourself."  The story should appeal to children and adults with a good sense of humor and wonderment, and it has a nice simple moral.

The project itself has been inked, and is now in the final stages of digital watercolor style painting.  We feel we can bring this deadline in on time for delivery for the supporters who help us cross the finish line by Valentine’s Day.   A special digital screensaver will be instantly shipped for our generous supporters.  You can keep it for yourself or share: "Someone loves you on Valentine’s Day” to support “Ellia and Sunrise."    We will use the Kickstarter funds for a limited first-run publication, acquire up to 10 ISBN numbers to provide the future option for creating copies on either a Kindle or for iPads, then have a marketing effort through social media and local library or school tours to bring awareness of the book into the world and to try and sell any remaining copies left over after Kickstarter pre-sales.

We are creating saddle spine, glossy softcover books rather than hardcover to have resources left over for marketing, and the possible option of having the book in a digital format as well. This would be the best of both worlds: a tangible, physical thing for the joys of children’s bedtime storytelling. Or, the option of being able to share the story more easily over the internet. We have ambitious stretch goals, which would carry this storytelling and marketing momentum into the creation of a sequel, as well as original T-shirt artwork and future cartoons to be featured on social media.  I also have eyes on taking the publishing and illustrating and marketing experience from this project to help other authors.   However, we understand that we need to produce a focused and wonderful first book before addressing the logistics of those future goals.

Risks and challenges

Since we are so close to the creative completion of the book, the chances are high we will reach our deadline of book production. We have given ourselves a good cushion from a Valentine’s Day deadline to shipping actual copies. The real challenge is gaining visibility for the character in the world. Accepting this with open eyes, we are optimistic that with creativity, video production experience, hustling and championing this project in both the digital streets as well as the physical ones, that we can build on the momentum of a successful Kickstarter campaign.

The Evan Stuart Productions website, coming soon, will offer the book for sale, and also capitalize on a collective of talented cartoonists and filmmakers from whom we will be calling in favors. We hope the marketing needs of this book will help us grow a following in social media.

With your help and support, we believe that we can bring the story into the world, and then carry our efforts into finishing the sequel.

Elli Stuart is a 7-year-old, going on 15, who is the love of her father's life. She is a natural storyteller, loves bunnies and animals, swimming in the river and lives in Portland, Oregon. Her birthday is on Cinco De Mayo, and she has been promised that there will be balloons and a band playing somewhere on that day for the rest of her life.

Evan Stuart is her father and an experienced illustrator, screenwriter and filmmaker living in the Portland, Oregon region, more specifically Oregon City, the first city at the end of the Oregon Trail.   He is the proud co-parent of the love of his life. Elli is the co-author and inspiration behind the project and the storytelling. We are working extremely hard at the storytelling, as well as a plan for marketing, to create a successful children's book trilogy aimed at 3-8 year olds, “Ellia and Sunrise”; “Ellia among the Alligators”; and “Ellia and the Waterfall Village”. Our dream and hope is that if this Kickstarter can reach its goals, that we can carry that momentum forward and complete the two additional books in the series.
