Who's behind it all?
My names Alexa, I'm an art director and designer, currently living in London but originally from rural Northumberland. I grew up playing outside in the Cheviot hills or running around on the Beach of the North East coast. I found that when I moved to London, the pace of the city made people feel really disconnected from Nature. It's a city that never really sleeps and so I created Blythe and Wild as a way to help encourage others to take the time to slow down. You can check out my other work and portfolio here...

What is Blythe and Wild?
Blythe and Wild is a slow lifestyle brand. I hear you, 'slow lifestyle brand', what's that? Well it's a place that aims to create products that encourage you to slow down your lifestyle. My personal way of slowing down became painting and getting into the ocean to go surfing, however I felt that a lot of other women and girls were scared to try surfing because they felt they didn't fit the stereotype of the surfer aka the slim blonde bombshell. This upset me and fuelled this passion project.
Why do I feel it's important?
We live in an age of high stress, of constant distractions and advertisements. It's easy to get caught up in it all, and it's an unhealthy habit to get caught up into. I wanted to create a space where people could learn how to utilise the spare moments in their day for themselves and their own personal wellbeing, whether that be breathing exercises, yoga flows, gratitude journals or in this case, paintings that encourage women to embrace their bodies, get outdoors and do something they love.
Where did the name come from?
My middle name is Blythe, it means happy and carefree. As I've gotten older I've come to really resonate with it and felt it was the perfect umbrella for my brand as it's resembles a feeling which I want people to get when using any of my products. Wild comes from the thought that we are all Wild women who have been conditioned by society to feel and look a certain way under pressure. I felt that Blythe and Wild could create products that help women or men feel happy, carefree and help them re-wild themselves and get back to nature.
What are we making?
The first project that we are undertaking is a series of paintings that dispel the stereotype given to women who surf. They are made using high quality acrylic paint and paper which are then digitally edited to perfect the shapes and colours. Prints will be done on A3 and A4 paper.
In the future I hope to make more products under Blythe and Wild, like planners that help you slow down, short yoga flows and e-books. For now though, we've got some awesome surfing ladies to get out into the world.
What do the paintings look like?
Below is a sneak preview of some of the paintings. I am currently working on painting more diverse women from different ethnicities as I feel full inclusivity is really important. I want young girls and women to feel represented through my art and encourage them to try something new.
Why am I doing it?
As I was growing up, I loved to go surfing at the beach, I was incredibly fortunate to live not too far from an untouched coastline. However I felt that the representation of women surfing in the media was incredibly sexualised and many times made me feel as though I didn't fit into the scene. I want to change that perception through my art, I want young girls to see themselves in the women I paint, whether they are white, brown, black, have curly hair, ginger hair, an afro. I want them to feel beautiful, welcome and encouraged to embrace the bodies they have and try something new like surfing which is proven to have positive effects on your mental health and wellbeing.
Why should you get involved?
Because you support the message, you like the paintings, you want to gift one to any girls, boys men or women in your life or you feel it's an important ethos to spread. I would love your support and love to have my art showcased in more peoples homes.
Where will your pledges go?
Your pledges will go towards resources like paint, paper and paintbrushes. It will help with printing costs, packaging and delivery all over the world. It will also help me further Blythe and Wild in the hope of encouraging people to slow down and live a healthier life.
Thank you very much for taking the time out to watch the video and read my message, it's truly appreciated, any pledges of any size are hugely appreciated. Check out the awesome rewards on the side and get involved in the Blythe and Wild message!
Risks and challenges
I'm a designer and art director so feel pretty in the know when it comes to printing and design. The risks would be from the printers side, if there's a delay in printing or delivery or any resources get damaged but I will try my upmost to make sure that it is a smooth process and everyone gets their prints on time and in great quality!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
