Hi! My name is Jessica, but I go by Jessilynn. I'm a 26 year old woman who suffers from PTSD, anxiety, agoraphobia, and depression. These disabilities keep me from working a "normal" job, but I've always had a passion for creativity. When I was younger I made jewelry, candles, and even peddled coasters made from Perler beads at school. I’ve set up this Kickstarter account, so that I can start my own creative business, Jessilynn's Healthy Soul Creations, where I'll be making and selling jewelry, candles, and other goods again.
I plan to use natural ingredients in my products. I will be using soy in my candles, because I refuse to use paraffin wax in my candles as they release toxic carcinogens into the air when they burn. One of the things I’m most excited to try making is lip balm with coconut oil, bees wax, shea butter infused with red raspberry seed oil (for sun protection), honey (as sweetener), essential oils, and natural coloring agents (cinnamon, cocoa powder, mica powder, alkanet root powder, and beet root powder). I will also have a vegan option for lip balm that will contain candelilla wax instead of bees wax. Backers that pledge $20 or more will be the first to try my products. I will update with photos when I begin production. My goal is to sell my products in my own Etsy shop.
I have a service dog for my disabilities. I've had interest from my friends in the service dog community about making products aimed towards those with service dogs. I already have an idea for a lip balm line called "Puppy Love" that my friends are totally on-board with. "Puppy Love" balm will come in tins rather than tubes, and have a personalized photo of the customer's dog on the label. We suspect these balms will be popular as a fundraising item for service dog teams in need, as well as local organizations and shelters. Some other ideas I have aimed towards dog lovers include decorating/customizing doggy treat containers and personalized coloring pages. I might even try learning how to make paracord collars and pull-tabs. I personally use paracord pulls so that my SD can retrieve items for me, including my keys and jackets.
I also enjoy photographing nature, and will be selling 8x10 prints from my collection. I'd also like to find old/vintage picture frames and make them new again with my art. Another thing I’m interested in trying my hand at is making my own adult coloring pages for stress-relief. I feel guilty that my dad has to shoulder all of our finances, so hopefully I can raise the money to start my own Etsy shop to bring in some income while feeding my creative soul. Thank you so much for your time, and for any donations I may receive to help achieve my dreams.
You might be wondering, "What qualifies me to make these products and run my own store?"
As I mentioned earlier, I have made similar products when I was younger. I've also been a lover of cosmetics for as long as I can remember. I was a featured blogger on the fashion, beauty, and pop-culture website, Lovelyish, for years, before they stopped outsourcing for writers and began only using writers they hired exclusively. I'm also a spiritual person. Having seen how important our health is, along with how much the big industries lie to us about ingredients in the products we use in our daily lives, I became inspired to create my own natural product. Everything used in my lip balm will be things found in nature. I've done my research and found that a lot of ingredients present in current beauty products labeled as nourishing actually have the opposite effect. Plus, have you noticed how many beauty products don't list their ingredients? In doing my legal research, I learned most beauty products don't need to be approved by the FDA. Only the colorants have to be approved. I also have some education in business. In high school, I was at the top of my Accounting class and a member/officer of both FBLA and DECA. I had a year of college at DeVry University for Web Graphic Design, and was on the Dean's List with a 4.0 GPA.
* Even though it says I only ship in the US, message me or ask a question about shipping for the reward item to your location. I will check how much shipping would cost, as I'd like to accommodate and keep my backers/customers happy.
Risks and challenges
The only risks and/or challenges I might have with my project are having my first-round of products not come out right. It's been awhile since I've made products like this, so it will be trial-and-error. I will keep trying until I make a good-quality and satisfactory product worth producing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
