About

There are several foam weapons on the market today, ranging from dollar store pool noodle swords, to high-end LARP weapons. What if you could combine the best of both worlds and create inexpensive, high quality foam weapons that appeal to both kids and grown-up kids (a.k.a adults)? Better yet, what if you could build your weapon with interchangeable pieces and custom color selection? We asked ourselves these questions, and Change Blade was born.

The prototypes that started it all.
The prototypes that started it all.

We've put in thousands of hours into developing a custom molding process, the prototypes that you see before you on this page, and the product configurator on our website. We've come a long way on a very tight budget, but to complete our journey, we need your help.

Change Blade is the first completely customizable and interchangeable foam weapon. Every blade consists of three pieces:

So your blade could look like this with the above examples:

Blade Configuration

There are currently 9 blade options, 9 hilt options, and 17 pommel / second blade options. Altogether, this means that more than 1300 unique weapon combinations are at your disposal. And that's before even mentioning colors...

Every piece of your Change Blade can be customized with color selection. All blades, hilts, and pommels have at least a primary color selection, with the majority having a secondary color selection also.

There are 11 main colors to choose from, and the same 11 colors are available as secondary colors as well.

When colors are added to the mix, there are hundreds of thousands of possibilities waiting to be discovered by you. This brings us to one of the features of Change Blade that we are extremely excited for:

With so many different options available, we needed a way to keep track of everything while simultaneously allowing people to build and visualize their weapon. We created a custom product configurator that allows anyone to create their weapon from scratch and assign colors to each piece. Check it out here: Change Blade - Build Your Blade

The product configurator allows you to easily choose which parts to assemble your blade from.

When a part is selected, the color options appear for that part, allowing you to quickly visualize your foam weapon.

In the third part selection box titled "Pommel/Second Blade," our pommel options are listed along with all of the blade options again. This allows for double blade creation and increases the number of combinations you can have for your blade.

A weapon can have as many colors as you want, but without a solid structure, it won't last long. We designed Change Blade specifically with this in mind.

Bends slightly under high pressure to soften blow, but is rigid and not "whippy" during combat.
Bends slightly under high pressure to soften blow, but is rigid and not "whippy" during combat.

Each part of your weapon is constructed from a high density polyurethane foam. It is very impact resistant, but still a flexible foam. This means that yes, it is completely safe for dueling, and the foam will retain it's shape under heavy attack.

The flexible polyurethane used immediately bounces back when pressure is released. It is durable, high impact, and can be easily colored during the manufacturing process.

Every part of your weapon also has a core running through it. The material we chose for these cores is fiberglass tubing. Fiberglass has long been used as the choice core material for professional dueling and training weapons. It offers the rigidity necessary for dueling and training, while flexing just enough to soften the impact.

The cores of all blade and pommel parts have screws built in to the bottom.

A threaded steel stud is manufactured into the core of all blades and pommels, making the weapons interchangeable.

Screws allow for all parts to be attached to the core of the hilt, which is internally threaded on both ends.

Internal thread of hilt allows for blades and pommels to be screwed and unscrewed easily.

Since our parts operate on simple screw mechanics, anyone can swap out their parts quickly, and with no tools necessary.

Although we designed Change Blade for all kinds of dueling, from common household quarrels to professional training, we knew going in to the project that we wanted to cater to the LARP community. There are several variations of LARP, and permission will likely come down to the decision of individual chapters and marshals, but we implemented several general safety guidelines for LARP into our designs.

All of our sword designs follow the example outlined above. There is a half inch of closed cell foam between the striking surface and the core. A "biscuit" tip is used to increase durability of the sword tip and to help prevent the core from protruding through the striking surface with heavy usage.

Change Blades are made interchangeable by steel studs that are embedded into fiberglass cores. The stud goes about 2" into the blade or pommel part. Check with your marshal about whether or not this is a safety concern.

If you have any questions about specific designs, always feel free to contact us.

Given the solid structure mentioned above that is on par with professional dueling and training weapons, Change Blades are absolutely built  to be USED and not just for show.

Our blades can stand up to any other training weapons. Here you see a wooden sword (depicted left) versus a Change Blade (depicted right).

The high density foam coupled with a durable, flexible paint and a nearly indestructible fiberglass core means you're getting a weapon that will last through years of dueling for a fraction of the cost of high-end foam weapons.

Although we never recommend hitting someone as hard as you can (foam can still hurt!), the flexible foam drastically lessens the heaviness of a blow.

We went in to this project with a strict budget. The money we've pulled from our scanty savings has allowed us to build a few working prototypes, develop a molding process, conduct much needed research and development, and give us the confidence we need to launch a Kickstarter. We know we have a fun, awesome product, but we need your help moving forward. Here's how we plan on using the Kickstarter money:

Reaching our Kickstarter goal will give us enough money to bring our product to life.
Reaching our Kickstarter goal will give us enough money to bring our product to life.

One of our most important goals from the Kickstarter funds is to set up our own manufacturing center. Due to our high standard of quality and the need for color customization of every part of your blade, the best solution is to use the molding knowledge we've gained and create the foam weapons ourselves instead of outsourcing. This will help us ensure the quality of each blade while also strengthening our local economy.

Our design process begins with a simple sketch, moves forward to CAD software, and with time is brought to life.

Parts will be created through a two-part mold. Colorants and paints are implemented during manufacturing to give each blade the custom feel that you ordered.

Since Change Blades are put together from a few parts, this means every blade can also be quickly disassembled for easy transport.

A section of our website has been dedicated to showcasing the different weapon parts that we will carry and sell. After our Kickstarter campaign and backer rewards are distributed, we will begin adding new parts on a regular basis.

One of the greatest assets to any business is complete transparency with their consumers. We are going to try hard to follow the timeline we have set for ourselves, and you will be notified as we reach every step along the way.

Due to the higher costs and risks associated with international shipping, we are only able to ship to the USA and Canada for our Kickstarter Campaign. For residents of Canada, each reward tier specifies how much the shipping will be. When Change Blades open up for sale to the public in 2017, we will make them available worldwide. Thank you for your support and interest!

With the launch of our Kickstarter, one of our goals is to create a community not only around Change Blades, but around foam weapons and armor crafting.

Whether you're in to Cosplay, LARP, professional dueling, martial arts training, or just like to play around with foam weapons, all are welcome to the forums to ask and answer various questions related to foam crafting. We'll also step in and offer several tips and tricks we've discovered along the way.

Let the fun begin! Happy Change Blading!

Risks and challenges

Since we are going down the road of self-manufacturing our product, we can avoid many of the issues that arise when you have to deal with someone else making your product, (who is likely overseas). That being said, we face a different challenge pursuing this path:

We've developed a molding process using two-part molds that will allow us to create the individual parts of your Change Blade. Some refining of the molding process needs to occur to increase efficiency of mass-producing each part, such as properly implementing your chosen custom colors into the manufacturing process. This is an issue of trial and error we will solve during the first month after successfully funding our campaign, and it will easily be repeatable once the formula is refined.
