Why we wrote The 50CAN Guide to Building Advocacy Campaigns
The 50CAN network has been building and running advocacy campaigns in communities across the country for years. But after searching far and wide, we’ve never found a book that we could give to advocates that would teach them what they need to know. So, we decided to create our own.
For the first time, we are bringing together all of our knowledge – with beautiful design – in one place that advocates can take with them on their journey. Over the past six months and after hundreds of meetings, we’ve created this book as a labor of love. Now we need your help to get it into the hands of hundreds of advocates all over the country.
This book is for anyone who is looking for a proven way to build an advocacy campaign, from novices to veterans. The approach is grounded in learning by doing, guiding you through the steps you need to create your own advocacy campaign. It also includes lots of blank spaces, templates and tools so that you can practice in real-time and come back to your ideas.
How you can help support this project
Now that we've written the book, we need your help getting it out into the world. Donating to this Kickstarter funds books for every advocate in the 50CAN network—from parents in Charleston, South Carolina fighting for better schools for their kids to teachers in Honolulu, Hawaii developing innovative teaching solutions—and in every CAN state in between. It also helps us distribute the book to advocates who join our training programs and community engagement events.
Now more than ever, we need citizen advocates who are working to make the world around them a better, more just place. Join us in building this movement together.
Risks and challenges
RISK: Can you translate the world of advocacy into a step-by-step guide to building campaigns at all levels, and for a variety of causes?
SOLUTION: Advocacy is a marathon, not a sprint. At 50CAN, we've been working on advocacy campaigns for years. We've studied the campaigns that worked and the campaigns that fell short, developed toolkits and trainings to get people to become citizen advocates in their own communities and listened to feedback from each and every partner. Together, we took this information and put it into an interactive field guide, one that teaches the tested methods of campaign development, and shared it with the public in this first-of-its-kind book. We hope you can use it to make change in your community!
RISK: Can you raise enough money to distribute this book to advocates for free?
SOLUTION: That's where you come in. This Kickstarter campaign is designed to put the book in the hands of advocates in the 50CAN network—parents, teachers, students, faith leaders and community activists—who are working to bring a high-quality education to all kids, regardless of their address.
RISK: What if you run out of copies to distribute for free to advocates?
SOLUTION: We would love to have this problem! We've done an initial print run of 2,000 books that we will distribute to advocates, training participants, partner organizations and individual purchasers on Amazon and the 50CAN website. Once we've distributed every last copy, we'll survey the remaining need for the books and develop a print run to fulfill the orders. We are also collaborating with partner organizations to develop a run of custom Guidebooks for different audiences.
