Our school is putting on our second musical, "West Side Story". We're a Title I low-income school in the Dallas Ft. Worth Area. While we are a low-income school, 100% of our students get accepted and attend four year universities. Therefore, we want our students, who traditionally would not receive such fine arts experiences, to be able to have the same theater experience as their peers in higher income areas.
Last year, we put on our first musical, "Grease" and had great success. However, we raised every cent for our production as our school had absolutely no budget for our theater program. We performed in our school's cafetorium and were only able to load-in the stage and set 48 hours prior to opening night. The strife was well worth it- as we made $2000 in ticket sales (which went to a lighting board and parcans at the end of the year) and had standing ovations for both performances.
We plan on working just as hard this year. We are seeking funding for:
Lighting: 6 elipsoids and three lighting trees.
Sound: wireless vocal mics and a new sound board (ours is over 10 years old).
Curtains or Curtain Rentals
Hiring an Acting Coach/Intern (Our school does not have a dedicated theater class. All theater is done extra-curricular by the "Theater Club" who is sponsored by by one tech director and one musical director).
Some our students reflected after our first production that, "it was amazing to be a part of something so big", "I didn't know I could be the leader I turned into backstage" , "I want to do this next year!" and "I think my place is on stage. I love the feeling!". Our shows are completely run by the students- from calling cues to running lights and sound to running props!
The kids said it all! Any support would be greatly appreciated!
