Dead Days is Masterwork Gaming’s first game, the culmination of more than 20 years of amateur game design. Tabletop game enthusiasts, the Masterwork team has spent over a full year designing and testing what they believe will appeal to both veteran and casual gamers alike: a simple, yet strategic cooperative zombie survival game that features both campaign-style and quick play variants.
With a goal to produce low cost, well-designed games that feature professional quality art and design, Masterwork Gaming more than recognizes the challenge involved in making Dead Days a reality. Nevertheless, the hope remains that this project will help us raise enough money to bring the game to fruition.
Our Kickstarter goal is set at a rather pricey $40,000 to cover the following: art and design for over 150 cards (featuring 60+ original pieces of art); printing costs; manufacturing and shipping. The largest portion of funds raised will be used to pay for quality art and design to produce the best-looking game possible. We will utilize the remainder to print, manufacture and ship the game’s first run.
Dead Days is set in the fictional town of Lakewood, Missouri some five weeks after a mysterious virus turns 99% of the world’s population into flesh-eating zombies. While the remaining 1% is immune to the virus, they are still susceptible to the throes of mortality, and must band together in order to survive.
Featuring two styles of play, players take the role of one of eight unique characters, gathering weapons, armor and other useful items in attempt to survive one zombie-dense location after another. For quicker games, players can elect to play standalone scenarios with randomized gear and locations. Players that desire something a bit more grueling, however, can attempt to survive a complete story-arc in one of three choose-your-own-adventure style campaigns. The game fully supports both methods of play for 3-5 players.

Perhaps one of the more unique aspects Dead Days brings to the table, Story Play allows players to control the choices their characters make both during and between game sessions. Each Story Play campaign is divided into acts in which players choose to participate in collaboratively as the game continues. Through a choose-your-own-adventure style mechanic, player groups elect to influence the campaign's narrative as they see fit. Where one group might elect to play out an act searching for food, another group of players might deem it more beneficial to leave the city as soon as possible. Each story provides its own set of risks and rewards that may or may not turn out the way that players had hoped - sometimes even the best laid plans go awry! Nevertheless, should the players survive the act they elected, they are then presented with another choice, and so on until the final act ultimately decides their fate. Dead Days will release with three multi-act campaigns, but make sure to check out our Social Goals to learn how to unlock more!
Designed for players who don't have the time to play through an entire campaign but still wish to scratch that zombie-killing itch, Dead Days also offers a Quick Play variant that puts players into one of three scenarios where they battle the undead to stay alive. Varying in difficulty, scenarios can be played in 30 minutes to an hour and are a great way to not only introduce yourself or new players to the game, but also test your group's ability to survive near-impossible situations once you feel you've mastered the game. Again, more scenarios can be unlocked, so make sure you check out our Social Goals for even more potential content.

Keep in mind too we designed Dead Days with expansions in mind, so that you can look forward to even more scenarios and story-arcs outside the town of Lakewood in the future. Should we raise money beyond the $40,000 target, however, we’ll be able to offer even more goodies now! All unlocked Stretch Goals will be included for free to all $25+ backers.
Everyone who donates $25 or more will receive all of the following unlocked stretch goals!
To ensure timeliness, we have opted for a relatively conservative number of stretch goals, as keeping the project manageable is a huge part of our strategy. We realize that stretch goals can be a fun and exciting way to maintain interest in a game, but we want to get your copy in the mail as soon as possible! We are confident that all our included stretch goals and rewards will have zero impact on Dead Days' release, which guarantees you'll be able to play it that much sooner.
In attempt to be as transparent as possible, there's really no way around it - we're going to need your help! Our ambitions are big but our company is small, possessing a finite amount of funds. As such, in addition to your pledge, liking and sharing Dead Days on Facebook will really help us to get the word out about our campaign. Don't worry, though, we'd never think of asking you to do it for free. In addition to our Stretch Goals, we are implementing a number of Social Goals that will give all backers who donate $25 or more access to even more content!

Risks and challenges
We want to do everything in our power to ensure that the risks to our backers are as small as possible. As such, we have limited the number of cards in the first set to “the essentials,” that is, those cards that make for fun, strategic gameplay while lending well to both Quick Play and Story Play games. Early in the development process we knew we wanted to find the perfect balance of necessary cards for a variety of reasons:
1) By limiting the card pool, we would be able to provide the game at a lower cost to the consumer. Board games can get expensive, and we feel strongly about designing our games for everyone to enjoy (and afford!)
2) Limiting the card pool would also require fewer pieces of art, which in turn would expedite our release date. Too many other crowdfunded games have been pushed back (some indefinitely) due to miscalculations when working toward a deadline. We refuse to let Dead Days be one of them. As such, we have hand-picked a number of artists that are capable of doing quality work within our specified time-frame.
3) Lastly, we wanted to streamline the game as much as possible. Often in game design, less is more, and while we could’ve designed a near infinite number of location, character, equipment and event cards that would take the narrative across the United States and back again, we chose to limit the base set to a single time and place. After several hundred playthroughs, changes and tweaks, we feel we are releasing to you the tightest version of this game possible.
We have also elected to provide relatively conservative stretch goals. Keeping the project manageable in order to focus on the release is a huge part of our strategy. We want to get this game into your hands as soon as possible! We realize that stretch goals can be a fun and exciting way to maintain interest in your game, but again have seen several kickstarted projects delayed due to unforeseen issues with add-ons and rewards. Having put a great deal of time into researching potential pitfalls we might encounter, we are confident that all our included stretch goals and rewards will have zero impact on our release. Finally, in case we run into challenges we hadn’t anticipated, we’ve even built time for them into our schedule that we might be able to meet our deadline regardless, and with the same level of quality we originally intended. While risks exist with all crowd-funded projects, it has been our mission to minimize said risks from the beginning. We are more than confident that we have taken the appropriate measures in order to do so. Check us out on Facebook to keep up-to-date on the game’s progress and news of release.
