It is March 2004, at an elite snowboard event in Val d’Isere, France. I am a competitive rider at the age of twenty-two. All was going well until the morning of the final, I miss hit the jump.
I fall the equivalent of three storeys on to a flat, icy surface and burst fracture my T12 vertebrae in my lower back. This isn’t quite the swift fairy-tale of redemption and overcoming adversity you might be expecting. There’s Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as I come to terms with the enormous trauma I’ve been subjected to.
Twenty-Two is an unashamedly personal photo-book. A selection of images that reflect my recovery process, internal and external, the combination of man-made and natural materials.
A parallel drawn to reflect the time metal rods were bound to my spine for 18 months.
Twenty-Two is a call to action for all of us to spend more time outdoors. A chance to connect with nature for better mental health. I believe the heart of photography is to connect with the world around us and share our true perspective with others.
The book is supported (not funded) by The Calm Photography Movement. A project that has been founded to help men express their emotions and provoke conversation through the medium of photography whilst raising awareness for CALM, an award winning charity dedicated to preventing male suicide - the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK.
I'm not a graphic designer, so to create the book and rewards, I've teamed up with Dan Adams Design, a creative studio in London. I wanted to work with them on this project because I like what they've done with Read And Destroy and their book design projects.

Risks and challenges
Twenty-Two will be my first book. I have worked on previous print projects for Red Bull, the Adi Dassler Foundation and Nandos. I have learned a great deal, delivered on time and in budget. I chose to self publish Twenty-Two so that I will have more control over the design, marketing and distribution. This comes with added challenges. Hence why I have chosen to work with Dan Adams Design. They know how to design and produce printed works to a high level.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
