About

When I was a kid, no video game had a greater impact on me than "Dungeon Master" on my Amiga 500. I obsessed over it, I dreamt about it, it absolutely consumed me. Even then, with only a basic knowledge of programming, I knew that what I wanted to do most in my life was to create adventures that could capture a person's imagination the way that game had captured mine. Almost 25 years later, I finally found myself in a position where I could truly begin to pursue that ambition, bringing a lifetime of software development knowledge to the field of video games.

In the past 5 years I've completed and released several self-funded games, two of which have been large scale RPGs: "Descend" on iOS, and "Coldfire Keep" on various platforms including Steam. I've learnt a great deal from those experiences, and now it's time for a much bigger and more ambitious project. This time around, I need some help to make it a reality, and that's where YOU come in!

"The Deep Paths" is a first-person, grid-based role playing game (RPG), which takes place in a fantasy world where the forces of good have been brutally culled by a merciless enemy, and humanity is on the brink of annihilation.

As the player, you will create and control a party of four characters derived from the traditional RPG archetypes of the Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, and Mage, and embark on a quest filled with exploration, puzzle solving, treasure hunting, and combat.

Your ultimate goal? To reclaim what your people have lost and bring an end to the tyranny of your enemy.

"The Deep Paths" features an overland map which allows the player to travel to numerous unique dungeon areas, each of which must be overcome in order to ultimately complete the party's quest and bring resolution to the story. There are even several optional and hidden dungeons for players to discover and explore!

A home town serves as a respite between adventures, as well as a source of trade, for both items and information, through interaction with several NPCs. Additionally, players will be able to partake in numerous activities whilst in town to benefit their party out on the road.

The game employs the grid-based movement, turn-based combat, and traditional party management systems made famous by classic crawlers such as "Dungeon Master", "Eye Of The Beholder", and "Lands Of Lore", along with a generous sprinkling of innovations to the genre which will make "The Deep Paths" a fresh experience even for veteran players.

The money that you contribute to "The Deep Paths" will go towards making this game the absolute best that it can be. A bigger budget means higher quality art, music, and sound effects, as well as more flexible gameplay and mechanics. It equals more monsters to fight, more items to loot, and ultimately, more locations to explore.

There's also the validation, which is incredibly valuable. Your backing tells me that this is a game you really want to play, and more-so than anything else, it's YOU that I want to make this game for; the old-school gamers who love these dungeon crawlers just as much as I do.

"The Deep Paths" will initially be available on Windows and MacOS desktops, as well as iOS and Android devices, with full keyboard/mouse and touch controls throughout. Additional platforms may also follow after the initial release.

My outside goal is to complete the game by September 2015, with beta testing and eventual release in the months to follow that.

Risks and challenges

Making any video game is a very tough job; there's a lot of work that goes into even seemingly simple aspects, and what looks like a quick tangent can take a developer off-track for weeks. In an RPG, this can be multiplied ten-fold due to the sheer number of systems that have to work together in harmony. In other words, there WILL be set-backs and stumbling blocks, and time estimates will be rough. But, this is a game that will get completed. It WILL be released, just like the previous RPG projects that I've started and finished in a timely manner. I'll keep everyone updated as often as possible regarding the progress of development - as you can see from the video and screenshots, work is already well under way.
