A New Kids Album Is Not Just For Kids...
Parents, teachers, therapists, doctors, artists, or anyone who works with children and/or liked the following shows: Quantum Leap, Arrested Development, Cheers, or The Golden Girls...
As a music therapist and producer, my passion is to produce songs that reach people on an emotional level.
How we all feel determines the quality of each moment we experience. Our attitudes, behaviors, and choices are all governed by how we feel. If we're devoid of joy and the ability to see the world with a childlike sense of imagination, well, take a look around you - we tend to be more childish than childlike, as a whole.
While I'm not claiming to have solutions to the predicaments we face, I do see first hand how my music impacts others - and I'd like to share this with you too.
Music video drafts:
Why Would You Take A Rocketship?!?
It seems the idea "all is one" hasn't quite come to fruition in our collective psyche. This song is my contribution to teaching children this truth through symbolic imagery. (Disclaimer: if you are an artist or visually oriented person, please view the sloppy video production through a compassionate lens. One of my goals is to produce professional quality videos. But here's what I put together with stock and Iphone footage.) Take a look and listen: (featuring Marty Beller on drums)
Why I Love The Seasons
This song is poignant because of its message: "finish what you start". It needs to be fully edited, mixed and mastered along with the rest of A New Kids Album. Take a look and listen:
Note: There is a faster and more fun version of this song on the album too, with horns instead of strings and ukulele instead of piano. That track is called: Finish What You Start.
GOALS and STRATEGY
My minimum goal of 10K will fund the final tracking, editing and mixing of A New Kids Album within 6-8 weeks from the successful close of this Kick Starter. The ideal goal of 15K will also cover mastering and duplication, but don't worry!!! Meeting the minimum goal will still be enough to bring the project to fruition.
Most of the album has already been recorded
Approximately 10% of the album has been mixed.
A New Kids Album will be released during fall 2013.
- a checklist of the instrumentation
- musicians who tracked on the album
- mixing status
This will continually be updated so you can check back anytime to see and hear the progress. I'll be posting more rough mixes and excerpts right here on this page during the life of this kickstarter.
I'd also now like to give you a brief glimpse into the core of my work in general, so you better understand the place I'm coming from and the direction I'm going...
Real Children's Music:
The "Kids Albums' are just one strand of my musical DNA. In my private music therapy practice, the bulk of my work consists of providing musical accompaniment to children as they improvise songs on the spot. But just to clarify, the children I work with are from all levels of development, meaning, some see me primarily for an alternative approach to music lessons, while others specifically for music therapy -but ultimately it all leads to the same thing: creativity, expression, connection, and joy. Other than choosing how fast or slow the song will go, all lyrics, melodies and musical changes are spontaneous, Take a look and listen:
CoCreative Music is a bridge between private practice and public performance.
To be clear, I am NOT looking to make a reality show out of this work. But as a teacher, I am inspired to share what I learn from these children, and give others the opportunity to be impacted by these masters of creativity and intuition. Just to zoom out a bit, what I'd like to do long term is produce music and art therapy projects to be used as resources by children, parents, artists, teachers etc...
And so, here is a brief summary of the minimum goal to complete A New Kids Album, and some larger goals for the future:
$10 000 will cover final editing, mixing, and the balance of what is owed to the musicians who worked on A New Kids Album.
$15 000 will pay for the above plus mastering, artwork, and duplication. This amount will seal the deal!
$25 000 + With this amount I will be able to replace my very tired much used Mac computer as well as upgrade to professional video equipment and/ or hire out video artists to produce innovative music videos to be used for both education and entertainment.
$35 000 + Overhaul my minimal and outdated recording set up.
ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND MILLION DOLLARS
With ample funding, I could move CoCreative Music out of my home (across the street from Barclay Center, Brooklyn) and into a professional facility where music therapy and recording sessions would be not interrupted by water pipes and construction and did I mention there's a police station and fire station directly across the street and a brand new bus stop directly above my home recording studio? Please know, I'm not complaining nor promoting myself as a victim here. I am very fortunate to be able to do my work at all - I just simply do not have the overhead to manifest these larger goals, which would certainly enhance the quality and integrity of my work.
Just in case you're taking me too seriously, I'd like to share one more video with you. it's completely ridiculous and a clear demonstration of why I refer to myself as a professional goofball. The quick back story: Whilst recording most of the lead vocals for A New Kids Album, I started to get "stuck". You know that feeling, when you want to finish something but things stop becoming fun because you start to worry if what you're doing is good enough...
So, I became inspired to try singing in a few different voices... and also, my mother and I sat together on the therapy sofa and discussed "growth". Take a look and listen:
Ultimately it's my ability to be an utter child which enables me to work with so many kids. If I wasn't able to stay connected to the world of humor and imagination, I don't think I would be as effective at teaching and reaching children. And, yes, I'm also a little nuts:)
My First Stretched Goal!!!
If we reach the $15, 000 mark, I will try to make another snow lady!
I had never seen snow until emigrating from South Africa to New York in 1994. So when I saw snow for the first time, I was so enchanted with the mystical froth that I kept piling it onto itself until she appeared. Honestly, I didn't plan ahead - it was a snow improvisation. So, if we meet my first stretched goal of 15K, I will make another snow improvisation in Prospect Park during the upcoming winter and send you all pics! You can even come hang out and help while I work on it if you live in the area. Keep in mind though, I haven't done this in almost 20 years, so no guarantees for the outcome:)
more stretched goals to be announced...
There are a variety of rewards available based on your level of contribution. For the complete list of rewards and dollar values, scroll up and to the right. Below are some links and images to give you more details...
- physical and digital copies of the Kids Album Trilogy
- music Jon produced for Sounds True audio programs by renowned teachers Andrew Harvey and Caroline Myss
- music therapy sessions
- Jon's "everything is music to me" ukulele
- an album for babies, by Vered
In 2012, I produced this album:
Good Morning My Love is a CD of 17 songs for parents and their babies. The music is playful, upbeat and soothing. The goal of the album is to encourage a deeper bond between you and your baby. (FYI, I'll be producing Vered's second directly following the completion of A New Kids Album)
The Integration Tree
This painting is a spin off of the "Ukule-trees" featured in the video draft for "Why I Love The Seasons". The children I work with really love this painting, which dovetailed into an activity idea:
The Finish What You Start Tree
The above paintings were designed to inspire children to make their own version of these ideas, and they can also complete the Finish What You Start Tree by painting directly onto it. It will be digitally printed on watercolor paper, so you can either hang it up as a pretty reminder to finish what you start, or let kids add their own expression to the piece.
The Finish What You Start Paintings (6X6)
One of a kind! Kate, a fellow teacher artist and musician, painted and donated this set specifically for A New Kids Album KickStarter.
She's also the mother of the children who made these songs:
And now, finally, check out the rewards listed to the right (scroll up) and please do share this page with anyone you think would "resonate":)
Thanks for you time and support
Ps Check back here soon, as I will be posting new mixes and excerpts as they become available!
Risks and challenges
Sometimes editing and mixing can uncover audio or performance issues, which could require more time to rerecord or edit. Even during the mastering phase, we may have to go back a step to "fix something in the mix". But either way, A New Kids Album will be released this year...and the sooner the better, because I have many other wonderful projects in the wings!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
