So, this project is one part of a 3-part script that I wrote. Each part is a self-contained short film, but all are interrelated.
"The Card Game" is part 1 and it focuses on the relationship between two characters, Abe and Parnell (Par). They are both fresh college dropouts living in New Orleans with no prospects and too much free time. The story revolves around a poker game they have with a group of their friends. As the game progresses, it becomes apparent that somebody has been cheating.
The film is shot pretty simply, without flashy effects or complex cutting. I want to focus as much as I can on the characters and their relationships to one another, so all camera movements, cuts, etc. exist only to deepen our understanding of them and what they want.
New Orleans isn't just an arbitrary location. Aside from it being a beautiful place to shoot, it represents a lot of different things for myself and the characters, so throughout the entire process--from writing to shooting--it has been central to the project.
Thus far, I've shot half of the scenes and I need to finish, so to do that I need to fly home. I'd like to fly myself and an assistant home with our equipment to get the shots we need. I may also have to rent some equipment for the days we're shooting.
If this project is successful, I hope that I can go on to shoot the other two parts, which are more ambitious in terms of scope.
So if you have any interest in this project, please please pledge whatever you can. There are some cool rewards and not only that, but it would make my mother very happy.
