Thank you to all the Backers! Thanks to your generosity and support this fundraiser has crossed the minimum threshold that will make the recording of the music possible! THANKS!!! To all the new visitors I would like to say that with your support, the film could get even closer to completion. We could put the helicopter in the sky in three Visual Effect Shots like this one:
We could also prepare the already recorded sounds of breaths for the final Sound Mix. I am already working on creating those possibilities. These are some of the last factors separating us from completion of this film. Thank you for being such a great CROWD-FUN-ding!!! All the best, -Andrzej
Music recording for action drama feature film: “1” aka ”The Switch”
The intent of this film is not only to tell a story that would affect the audience, but also to tell it without any dialogue.
It is an attempt to explore silent moments, glances, body language and facial expressions as the very essence of anything that is ever "said".
What is unique about this film.
“1” is an action drama. During its 1h 40min there is no narration and no single word of dialogue is uttered. This alone immediately sets the film apart as an artistic exploration and a search for widening the language of cinema. When finished, it is to be not only a good film but also a contribution to the art and culture.
The no-words narration is unique and difficult to do. However, the audience does not feel the need for spoken language. “1” has intense relationships of its characters and manages to touch upon difficult themes and conflicts. It does it with considerable profoundness and clarity. The audience “gets it” and will merely realize later that no one spoke from the screen.
This is because “1” is not a silent film. The sound design here is more important than ever. Every step, waft of wind, cry of a bird, will have far greater importance than in a typical movie. Sudden silences and music will have a deep meaning and narrative consequence. While the sound design is not finished yet, the edited picture provides a rich and inspiring field of opportunity for creation of such an organic, haunting ambiance that can be “different” in its own right. The current stage of edited sound effects confirms that the realization fulfills the promise.
Because there is no dialogue, the simple storyline of the film is not obvious. Watching the film becomes a multi layered, profound experience. Small ambiguities of simple facts add themselves, creating the experience of an iceberg, where the visible tip is only a hint of much greater presence. That sense of something much greater than the obvious is to stay with the viewer. As evidenced at a few screenings of the unfinished film, that sense is already there.
The experience of “1” is unique in big part due to great acting in the film. Established actors as well as some less known or the first-timers, have some of their best ever performances in this film. Even silent clips from the film are testament to the intensity and poetry of created characters.
This film is visually beautiful too. Use of natural lighting, along with combination of subtle and spectacular camera movements, make “1” suspenseful even in the current, unfinished stage.
The storytelling is also helped by innovative editing, which “breaks every rule in the book”. The film was shot having in mind many fine, out of the ordinary cuts and succeeds in incorporating many new resolutions. Still, even if it makes an under the surface impact, this new editing is not distracting. For the audience, watching is seamless.
All in all, perhaps the most unique quality of the film is that it speaks as a whole. The film is greater than the sum of its elements. This is where lays its potential greatness and lasting impact.
One look can tell more that pages of dialogue.
THE MUSICIAN: Zbigniew Namyslowski
Willis Conover, one of the greatest Jazz critics of all time, wrote that Namyslowski is “among the best anywhere in the world. (…) Anyone who misses Namyslowski is missing a unique source of creativity in 20th century. Namyslowski is a giant!"
Namyslowski was the first musician from Communist Europe to play in the West and was immediately noticed for his instrument virtuosity, sound and imagination. Since then, he remains to be one of the most important European jazz musicians. Two of his records were voted as 2nd and 3rd most important polish jazz records of all time. His saxophone is also prominent on the record voted as the most important.
On the date another great musician will also be recording his (violin) solo for another scene.
Krzesimir Debski is not only a great jazz violinist, but also sought after film music composer.
This is going to be great!!! Thank you for checking this Kickstarter project out.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT !!!
Risks and challenges
The only obstacle to fulfillment of this this film would be my death.
The film so far was born out of no resources. It is 8 years in the making and now it is almost done. Each time something positive happens, the potential for the next thing follows.
The road was not easy, the process relied on people and companies donating their services.
The going was made tough by lack of budget, broken promises, camera files problems, computer and software problems, me loosing a job, my daughter's terrible sickness, close encounters with eviction and other stuff that all of us know.
I am going to get there. This film will be finished.
Still, this scene with this musician's solo is worth doing, even if it were a stand alone project.
