The Clue Hunter book series (and eventually our app) is a fun and exciting twist on your old standard Search & Find books. Instead of just looking for a person or object, you have to uncover clues, remember them, and then try to find the right one!
What makes The Clue Hunter different from other Search & Find Books?
In The Clue Hunter, we show pieces of the final creature. Each page you turn has a different part of the creature magnified so you can see the color. We write the clue out too, for those who remember what they read more than what they see. We want to make sure that all types of learners can have fun with our books. We also test them with color blind kids to make sure that they can see the difference in the color choices we make.
Within each book, we create Bonus Challenges for the kids. For every creature, we highlight interesting facts throughout the pages. At the end of each book, we have a Bonus Challenge where kids are asked to recall the facts they've learned by answering questions. They can also visit our website to get hints and answers, or to find out more interesting facts about the creatures in our books.
Why is The Clue Hunter so great for kids... and grownups too?
Our books engage in core learning processes for kids and adults alike. Memory and retention are vital to the learning process. For kids, making memory and retention fun has been a goal of teachers for ages! Kids love the challenge of Search & Find books.
We also never show the full image of the correct creature. Instead, the kids are forced to put the clues together in their mind. This is another exercise for the brain to help develop Cognitive Mapping skills. Cognitive maps serve the construction and accumulation of spatial knowledge, allowing the "mind's eye" to visualize images in order to reduce cognitive load, enhance recall and learning of information.
Aside from all the technical reasons why our books are great for kids, we're making a real effort to make sure they're fun and interesting too! When we get funded, the majority of our dollars are going to hiring artists to work full time with us to create a unique and beautiful style. The art we're showing in our samples is just a taste of what we hope will become a very collectable series.
What exactly is my money used for?
This project is meant to fund the creation of the first 5 Clue Hunter books and the marketing and publishing of Book 1. It will pay for the artists, editors, and marketing person to work full time. We estimate that each book will be about 2 weeks of work for 4 people - 2 artists, our editor and designer, and our marketing person. The printing and shipping costs for our rewards, bookmarks, and the first book alone will be about $2000.00. Marketing costs (advertising, travel to presentations, and more) will be about $1000.00. This means that each person will receive only $1300.00 for about 3 months of work. We are all working other jobs until we can make The Clue Hunter a success, and for that, we need support from people like you!
We feel the sacrifice is worth it, because we know The Clue Hunter will help kids from K5-12, and even adults! We've planned out over 20 books for the series and we are already designing and planning a fun game for iPhone, Droid, and tablet devices that will bring our brain exercises to a much wider audience.
What if you get more money than your goal?
Our goal is the bare minimum we need to scrape by and get these books finished. It is only enough to print and publish the first book and create the rewards for our backers. We still need to finance the publishing of the next 4 books and beyond.
If we happen to do extraordinarily well on Kickstarter, we'll be able to publish the full 20 books we have planned so far. We have a lot more books as concepts - not just creatures, but cars, boats, airplanes and other objects to feature in the series! We'll also be able to begin development on our web-based game and app. We've already got the design, we just need the programmers and graphic artists to help make this vision a reality.
It would mean so much to us if we went above and beyond our goal, that we will definitely make our backers feel appreciated with exclusive book deals and other cool things in the future.
If you want to find out more about investing in our project outside of Kickstarter or if you're a publisher interested in our book series, please visit us on our website: http://www.thecluehunter.com or our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Clue-Hunter/159256487573773
This bee book (below) is a small sample of The Clue Hunter series. We would like to give you a free copy so you can see how the concept will come together. We hope that you will share this FREE copy with all your family and friends and help us spread the word about how The Clue Hunter actually makes it easier for kids to learn by using their cognitive mapping skills and how our unique games help to increase your memory retention. Please and enjoy and share The Clue Hunter experience!
Risks and challenges
Whenever you start something new, there are challenges to be had. The Clue Hunter has no shortage of these. We're new to the publishing game. None of us have ever published a book before, let alone self published. We hadn't commissioned artists for work before, and this was definitely a challenge.
Over the last few months we've learned a lot just by creating our sample book. We've learned about printing, and getting the right resolution and page sizes. We've researched self-publishing, and also looked into getting published, so we know how much of an investment it is to print and ship.
It is also difficult to find the right artists who are willing to commit to the project for the long haul. We've worked with 6 different artists over the course of creating the sample book, and learned a lot about working with different personalities and styles. We've selected our artists based on their commitment and dedication to working hard, so we think this challenge is behind us.
Another challenge is the rapid change from hard copy books to E-book and what that means for the industry. We're meeting this challenge head on by designing our e-books and hardcopy books in a very media specific way.
Our hardcopy books will feature the most difficult and detailed art. We're making them truly collectable so that people want to own them because they look beautiful, and because they can go through them again and again. The Special Edition versions will come with your very own Clue Hunter magnifying glass. We're also making the covers and jackets for our hardcover books have a theme - so when you have the whole collection on a bookshelf, they look unique. Kids will love to have the whole set!
Our E-books are designed for mobile devices and tablets. The art is more simple, but the challenges are just as difficult. In the E-book devices we focus more on the creatures, and we're going to sell them with difficulty levels:
Flatfoot – 3 Colors, 10 creatures to look through on the solution page
Gumshoe – 3 Colors, 20 creatures
Analyst – 4 Colors, 15 creatures
Scout – 4 Colors, 25 creatures
Private Eye – 5 Colors, 20 creatures
Detective – 5 colors, 25 creatures
Expert Investigator – 6 Colors, 30 creatures
(**these are approximate and may be adjusted depending on design)
This way, you can get the difficulty level that is right for you. Our E-books are also going to be priced very reasonably (Just .99 -1.99 each).
We're also prepared for the future. We have the design for a web-based game and app, both Free and Pay to Play.
