It's a new year, which means it's time for a new Angler's Pint. Based on feedback from current Angler's Pint owners, Karen decided to go with a Rainbow Trout for the first Angler's Pint design of 2016!
After two successful Kickstarter campaigns, the Angler's Pint is back with the third trout in the Angler's Pint collection! This is your chance to either add another Angler's Pint (or pints!) to your collection or begin your collection of these quality, fine art glasses designed by award-winning artist and angler Karen Talbot.
What is an Angler's Pint?
Tall tales of a day on the river are often accompanied by fine brews. The Rainbow Trout Angler's Pint, like its predecessors, will insure the tallest tales will be told while sipping your favorite beverage from this 21.5 ounce glass featuring a beautiful full-color rainbow trout scientific illustration.
If you've enjoyed a pint in Britain, you may have noticed a small crown etched near the top of the glass in which your pint was served. The crown stamp indicates the glass is a certified vessel capable of holding 20 imperial fluid ounces (568 ml). A similar certification does not exist in the US, but the standard pint served on this side of the pond is just 16 US fluid ounces (473 ml).
Don't you think it appropriate that, after a long day on the river, you and your angling friends are rewarded with a proper pint?
Karen is an award-winning Maine artist who launched the first Angler's Pint (the Brook Trout Angler's Pint) last summer. An angler and an artist best known for her fishes, Karen's scientific illustrations and fine art are collected by anglers, biologists and those who appreciate the timeless aesthetic of scientific illustration. Her work hangs in natural history museums and can be found in textbooks and scientific journals. Now with the Angler's Pints, her work can also be found in your cupboard!
The Process - Reproducing Full-Color Art on Glass
The process used for creating these full-color glasses is the highest quality process short of hand-painting each one (if you want a hand-painted glass, check out the $60 pledge level!).
Reproducing full-color art on glassware can be a challenge, which is why, after lots of research, Karen teamed up with a US-based company known for working with craft breweries and other discerning customers who know the value of quality artwork on quality glassware.
The rainbow trout on this Angler's Pint is reproduced using ten inks to achieve the best color match to Karen's original painting. Inks are silk-screened color-by-color onto a sheet of special paper and coated with a cover that lifts the image off as one piece. The finished image is then hand-applied to the glass and permanently fired on. The end result is not the least expensive option, but it is both durable (read dishwasher safe!) and absolutely gorgeous!
Upon successful completion of this Kickstarter campaign, the Rainbow Trout Angler's Pint will be available at www.KarenTalbotArtOnline.com starting at $12 per glass. Backing this project now will not only help Karen get this production run of Rainbow Trout Angler's Pints completed, but you'll also get the absolute best price--as low as just $7 per glass!
Karen has created a number of different reward levels that allow backers to get a single Rainbow Trout Angler's Pint, multiple Rainbow Trout Angler's Pints or a collection including all three existing trout Angler's Pints (Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout & Brook Trout Angler's Pints). The familiar adage "The more you buy the more you save" applies. If you back the campaign at the $70 reward level, you will be paying just $7.00 per Angler's Pint (that's $5 off the retail price of each glass and an overall savings of $50!).
There are two early bird reward levels that Karen announced to backers of the Brook Trout and Brown Trout Angler's Pint Campaigns before launching this campaign. These pre-announced early bird reward levels are for one Rainbow Trout Angler's Pint, and they are limited in number, with the intent of rewarding loyal backers. The $8 early bird reward is limited to 25 people, and the $9 reward is limited to 30 people. After that, the standard reward level for a single Rainbow Trout Angler's Pint is $10, which is still $2 off the expected retail price.
After producing several Angler's Pints Karen has learned a lot about the actual costs associated with designing, producing and shipping glassware. While some of what she has learned means she's been able to tighten the budget in places, other factors have increased costs.
As has been the case with the other Angler's Pints, most of the budget for the Rainbow Trout Angler's Pint is dedicated to design and set-up costs for the first run. As Karen did with both the Brook Trout and Brown Trout Angler's Pints, she has budgeted for ten inks and ten separate screens to get the Rainbow Trout Angler's Pint artwork as true to the original painting as possible. Excluding shipping costs, almost one-third of the Rainbow Trout Angler's Pint budget is dedicated to those set-up costs.
The next major expense is the glassware itself. Quality, durable, US-made glassware isn't cheap, but the backers of the previous Brook Trout Angler's Pint absolutely love the shape, feel and weight of the glass Karen chose. These are distinctive glasses that get noticed!
Because the project is producing a product that, despite its durability, is still breakable, another significant line item in the budget is packaging materials and accounting for handling claims when breakage does occur. Most backers of the Brown Trout Angler's Pint received their glassware in a pulp mailer specially designed for mailing glasses. These mailers are great and can be used individually to ship one or together to ship up to 12 glasses (although the maximum pre-order through Kickstarter is for 10 glasses). Unfortunately they do add to both packaging and shipping costs, but the clear advantage is that Karen didn't have a single broken glass in the more than 1000 Angler's Pints mailed since she started using them! These pulp mailers also make it easy for you to order in bulk and then ship individually to family and friends.
The remainder of the Rainbow Trout Angler's Pint budget is dedicated to various smaller fees, including the Kickstarter fee and payment processing fees. Any additional funds will be used for marketing efforts, to increase the initial run size and hopefully stretch goals!
The Brook Trout Angler's Pint campaign nearly tripled the original goal in 30 days, which allowed Karen to add several stretch goals (everyone who backed the campaign at the $8 reward level received a Brook Trout Angler's Pint, a Striped Bass Angler's Pint and two Classic Fly Jiggers). In short for their $8 pledge, they received $36 of glassware!
Karen is hopeful the Rainbow Trout Angler's Pint Kickstarter Campaign will be equally as successful. If the campaign reaches its goal before it closes, Karen will add stretch goals, including the second saltwater Angler's Pint! Stay tuned!
$6200 Stretch Goal Reached!
UPDATE: The campaign surpassed the $6200 stretch goal meaning that backers supporting the campaign at reward levels less than the $30 Angler's Pint Slam reward will get one free Classic Fly Jigger, and backers supporting the campaign at the $30 reward level or above will get two free Classic Fly Jiggers!
A Note on Shipping
Karen Talbot Art ships via UPS or USPS by default within the United States and has negotiated a rate of just $9 to ship one Angler's Pint almost anywhere nationwide. This shipping charge will be added to your reward, bringing the total cost to $19 at the $10 reward level. The cost for shipping goes up slightly at reward levels where backers are receiving two or more Angler's Pints.
The cost of shipping is, not surprisingly, higher for international orders. International backers are only able to back at the 1 Angler's Pint Reward levels. If you are an international backer, and you want more than one Angler's Pint, please message Karen through Kickstarter so she can get you the best customized shipping quotation. Please also note that it is possible your country will also charge you customs duties.
Angler's Pint Media Coverage
The Angler's Pint has been well received by individual anglers and various media outlets. See some of the buzz at the links below:
Risks and challenges
This is Karen's fourth Angler's Pint, and she is working with the same US-based manufacturer, so the risks and challenges are less than they were with the first Angler's Pints. Having said that, there is always the possibility for unexpected issues to arise during a complicated printing process. Likewise, there are potential issues when mailing large numbers of glasses. Karen has tried to anticipate any issues and address them before they create a delay.
If any issue arises, Karen will notify all backers through Kickstarter updates, and if you have any questions, your encouraged to reach out to Karen through Kickstarter or directly at Karen@KarenTalbotArt.com.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
