The first snow fell in the mountains of Western Maine this weekend, which has me thinking about Christmas and the perfect Christmas gift for every angler on your list (including yourself!): a Brown Trout Angler's Pint!
After a very successful first campaign, the Angler's Pint is back with the second trout in the Angler's Pint collection! This is your chance to either add another Angler's Pint (or pints!) to your collection or begin a collection of these quality, fine art glasses designed by award-winning artist and angler Karen Talbot.
What is an Angler's Pint?
Tall tales of a day on the river are often accompanied by fine brews. The Brown Trout Angler's Pint, like its predecessor, will insure the tallest tales will be told while sipping your favorite beverage from this 21.5 ounce glass featuring a beautiful full-color brown trout scientific illustration.
If you've enjoyed a pint in Britain, you may have noticed a small crown etched near the top of the glass in which your pint was served. The crown stamp indicates the glass is a certified vessel capable of holding 20 imperial fluid ounces (568 ml). A similar certification does not exist in the US, but the standard pint served on this side of the pond is just 16 US fluid ounces (473 ml).
Given that fly fishing's roots are firmly planted in Britain, don't you think it appropriate that, after a long day on the river, anglers are rewarded with a proper pint?
Better yet, how about an Angler's Pint?!
Karen is an award-winning Maine artist who launched the first Angler's Pint (the Brook Trout Angler's Pint) during the summer of 2015 with an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign (to see an album of people enjoying their Angler's Pints click here for Pinterest and here for Facebook). In fact, the Kickstarter campaign was so successful, that she actually created a second Angler's Pint (a Striped Bass Angler's Pint) with the surplus revenue! Now she's looking to build on the Angler's Pint's popularity and further expand the line to include a Brown Trout Angler's Pint. As explained below, the Kickstarter campaign will help cover the start-up costs and production costs associated with getting a new design from concept to completion.
The Process - Reproducing Full-Color Art on Glass
The process used for creating these full-color glasses is the highest quality process short of hand-painting each one (if you want a hand-painted glass, check out the $50 pledge level!).
Reproducing full-color art on glassware can be a challenge, which is why, after lots of research, Karen teamed up for production with a US-based company known for working with craft breweries and other discerning customers who know the value of quality artwork on quality glassware.
The brown trout on this Angler's Pint is reproduced using ten inks to achieve the best color match to Karen's original painting. Inks are silk-screened color-by-color onto a sheet of special paper and coated with a cover that lifts the image off as one piece. The finished image is then hand-applied to the glass and permanently fired on. The end result is not the least expensive option, but it both durable (read dishwasher safe!) and absolutely gorgeous!
Upon successful completion of this Kickstarter campaign, the Brown Trout Angler's Pint will be available at www.KarenTalbotArtOnline.com starting at $12 per glass. Backing this project now will not only help Karen get this production run of Brown Trout Angler's Pints completed, but you'll also get the absolute best price--as low as just $7 per glass!
Karen has created a number of different reward levels that allow backers to get a single Brown Trout Angler's Pint, multiple Brown Trout Angler's Pints or a collection of up to three different Angler's Pints (Brown Trout, Brook Trout and Striped Bass Angler's Pints). The familiar adage "The more you buy the more you save" applies. :-) If you back the campaign at the $70 reward level, you will be paying just $7.00 per Angler's Pint (that's $5 off retail).
There are two early bird reward levels that Karen announced to backers of the Brook Trout Angler's Pint Campaign before launching this campaign. These pre-announced early bird reward levels are for one Brown Trout Angler's Pint, and they are limited in number, with the intent of rewarding loyal backers. The $8 early bird reward is limited to 25 people, and the $9 reward is limited to 50 people. After that, the standard reward level for a single Brown Trout Angler's Pint is $10, which is $2 off the expected retail price.
Karen has added a special reward level for all of you who want to get your Christmas shopping done early. Back the campaign at the $80 level, and Karen will send two gift wrapped Angler's Pints (1 Brown Trout Angler's Pint & 1 Brook Trout Angler's Pint) and a personalized note to four different addresses (U.S. only).
The Brook Trout Angler's Pint budget was $1500 less than the Brown Trout Angler's Pint budget owing to things Karen learned along the way while planning, managing and shipping those first Angler's Pints.
As was the case with the Brook Trout Angler's Pint, most of the budget for the Brown Trout Angler's Pint is dedicated to set-up costs for the first run. With the Brook Trout Angler's Pint, the production company had underestimated the number of inks necessary, so Karen has increased the budget for the Brown Trout Angler's Pint to accommodate the use of up to ten inks and ten separate screens. Excluding shipping costs, almost one-third of the Brown Trout Angler's Pint budget will go to set-up costs.
The next major expense is the glassware itself. Quality, durable, US-made glassware isn't cheap, but the backers of the first Brook Trout Angler's Pint absolutely love the shape, feel and weight of the glass Karen has chosen to use for all Angler's Pints.
Because the project is producing a product that, despite its durability, is still breakable, another significant line item in the budget is packaging materials (see the video below) and accounting for handling claims when breakage does occur.
The remainder of the budget is dedicated to various smaller fees, including the Kickstarter fee and payment processing fees. Any additional funds will be used for marketing efforts and to increase the initial run size.
The Brook Trout Angler's Pint campaign nearly tripled the original goal in 30 days, which allowed Karen to add several stretch goals. For example, everyone who backed the campaign at the $8 reward level received a Brook Trout Angler's Pint, a Striped Bass Angler's Pint and two Classic Fly Jiggers. In short for their $8 pledge, they received $36 of glassware!
The Brown Trout Angler's Pint campaign is only a 15-day campaign because Karen wants to be sure the glassware is ready for a Christmas delivery. As such, she does not expect to have the same level of stretch goals. If, however, the campaign takes off in the first few days, she will revisit the idea of stretch goals at that time. Stay tuned!
A Note on Shipping
While durable, the Angler's Pint is still glass. As a result, individual Angler's Pints mail in crushproof boxes and are guaranteed to arrive unbroken. In addition to the expense of shipping glass, the Angler's Pint is relatively heavy, adding to the cost of shipping.
Karen Talbot Art ships via UPS or USPS by default within the United States and has negotiated a rate of just $9 to ship one Angler's Pint almost anywhere nationwide (for some locations, USPS shipping may be used instead of UPS). This shipping charge will be added to your reward, bringing the total cost to $19 at the $10 reward level. The cost for shipping goes up slightly at reward levels where backers are receiving two or more Angler's Pints.
The cost of shipping is, not surprisingly, higher for international orders. Please also note that it is possible your country will also charge you customs duties.
In addition to shipping costs, the overall goal is set at a level to allow Karen to purchase durable packaging. Here is a video explaining how she packed the first Brook Trout Angler's Pints:
Refer Five New Backers & Get a Free Angler's Pint
Karen just added a referral program to this Angler's Pint campaign! If you've already backed the Campaign, get five friends or family members to also back the campaign and tell Karen you referred them in a message through Kickstarter. Karen will then send you one additional free Angler's Pint with your other reward(s). It's that easy!

Risks and challenges
A Note from Karen: "As backers of the Brook Trout Angler's Pint know, there were some production issues that delayed the shipping date. I tried to be as transparent about these issues as possible through both Kickstarter updates and updates on the Karen Talbot Art Facebook page. You can go back and read the Kickstarter updates (http://kck.st/1GjfmYD) to learn more.
The issues were primarily ones that the production company didn't realize would be a problem until they started the actual printing process. The good news is that those issues are now resolved for all future Angler's Pints, and my account manager is working closely with me to make sure the first Brown Trout Angler's Pint production will go smoothly. Phew!
The other major issue that can lead to delays is making sure the art itself is reproduced as well as possible. To avoid any delays and disappointments, I've increased the goal of the campaign by $1500 to cover the following:
1. Hiring a local graphic designer to work with me to convert the artwork to a vector file for screenprinting by the production company (I've actually already done this for the Brown Trout Angler's Pint!)
2. Up to ten screens to best reproduce the full color design
3. Travel in order to be on-press when the artwork prints
The final issue that caused a delay on shipping the first Angler's Pints was shipping materials that did not work with the actual Anger's Pints once I had them in the studio. I've now worked through those issues and have suitable packaging for all reward level configurations.
As a result of working out these issues through the production and shipping of the first Angler's Pints, I am confident that the Brown Trout Angler's Pint will indeed ship in time for a Christmas 2015 delivery! As always, I will share any issues or changes to the expected delivery date of the Brown Trout Angler's Pint with you here."Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
