Three of my favorite things in the world are music, comics, and snarky t-shirts. Last April I launched my own web comic about music, "With the Band." Now I'm ready to start my own snarky t-shirt company, and I need your help to do it.
I already have seven designs ready to go to the printer (Time 4 Change Embroidery), as well as a dozen full-quality test prints of the first design, ten of which are available for Pre-Sale in the Pledges (see the Pledges to the right). My goal of $1000 will pay for the first design's three color screens, the test printing, and six dozen additional printings to go up for sale.
The First Design
The first design, "Mouse Star", comes from this strip. As you can see, it's not only ready to go, it's already started. The screens are done--I just need to order more shirts! (Vader mask not included!)
Update: Now that the project is funded, note that anyone who Pledges a Pre-Release will get his/her Mouse Star shirt in just a couple of days, and will still one of each of the Stretch Goal shirts that opens when they're printed next month!
These are all designs that I will eventually make, either through another Kickstarter or some other means, depending on how long it takes for the business to become self-sustaining. I would love to make as many of these right out of the gate as possible, so hopefully we will be able to reach some of these stretch goals.
To manage costs, I've alternated the stretch goals between more complicated, colorful, and therefore more expensive designs, and simpler, single-color text gags. Each single color print has a set text color and a default shirt color, as noted below. However, you can choose whatever color shirt you want for these.
Stretch Goal #1: $1700
Based on this strip, the "Patronizing" design is simple, subtle, and, I think, hilarious. Black text on your choice of shirt color (defaults to gray).
Stretch Goal #2: $2700
The "Balrog" design, based on this strip, is the most complicated, colorful, and therefore most expensive. I hope we get to it, though, as it's one of my favorites.
Stretch Goal #3: $3400
The "Child Progeny" design is another simple, subtle, funny text gag, taken from this strip. Green text on your choice of shirt color (defaults to purple).
Stretch Goal #4: $4200
Drawn from "With the Band's" title banner, the "Joshua Tree" design can be found here, and, well, pretty much everywhere on the site.
Stretch Goal #5: $5000
Another text gag, the "Paranoid" design is one of my favorite truisms. You can find its comic here. Black text on your choice of shirt colors (defaults to gray).
Stretch Goal #6: $6000
Another colorful, and therefore expensive, design, "Hugz" is the first to feature a regular "With the Band" character--in this case, Neil--prominently, if you don't count "The Joshua Tree." You can read the associated comic here. Unlike most of the picture designs, you can choose the shirt color for this one (defaults to white).
Stretch Goal #7: $7000
Because several of you wondered (one of you quite aggressively!), why does "Groupie Squirrel Tees" have no Groupie Squirrel Tee? Now we do! The Groupie Squirrel has become the most popular character in With the Band, much to Neil's chagrin. Help us reach our Stretch Goal of $7000 and you can become a Groupie Squirrel Groupie! In the meantime, you can see Groupie Squirrel's debut here.
Risks and challenges
Most of the risks and challenges I've already overcome with the test printing of "Mouse Star". The printer and I already have a working relationship, and we've sorted out the formatting issues between my designs and her equipment.
The most likely challenge is one that I welcome, that of too much success. If this Kickstarter generates enough support, production delays will be inevitable. The printer can turn around hundreds of shirts in less than two weeks, but if we need to generate thousands, obviously it will take longer.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
