VAUBAN FORTRESS is a complete set of 3D Printable .STL files that allow you to print and assemble modular fortifications typical of the Age of Enlightenment and the Napoleonic era, for use with miniature tabletop wargames.
The files include everything you need to print the bastions, walls, gates, stairs, and barracks shown in these 3D renderings and photographs. The files will come in several configurations, allowing you to print on printers with beds as small as 4" by 4 ".
The Basic Vauban Fortress looks like this!
It is inspired by this real life fortification at Fort Ticonderoga in New York.
The inside of the barracks building contains rooms accessible when each floor is removed. The doors are removable and can be modeled in open or closed positions. The 28mm fort measures 30" by 30".
Because 3D models are scalable, you can print the models in any scale you chose - limited only by the constraints of your printer. The files will be delivered to you optimized for 28mm miniatures as shown below (cannon and figures are shown only for display and are not included). I have worked hard to make the models wargamer friendly so that figures on standard bases of 40mm, 20mm square or 25mm rounds can all move and rank up properly.
We have tested the files in other scales to make sure the details hold up as they reduce in size. The photo below shows a sample in 28mm, 15mm and 10mm. Even at the smallest scales, the details stand out.
The basic fortress files are mostly finished with some optimization and experimenting still in the works. That means the basic fortress will be available to you as soon as the project funds are released.
What will the funds be used for? We do not need a lot of funds to get this started and have set a modest funding goal. The initial goal will fund the commercial licenses we need for the various software programs we have used. It will also cover the development costs to date. Once we fund, the fun begins. Anything over the goal will allow us to commit the time and resources to expand the range. Take a look at some of our ideas about what is possible.
Everyone loves stretch goals and we have lots of ideas.
Here is a look at the first prototype sculpt of the Bartizan.
I am still working on the prototypes for the battle damage, but here is a peak at an early test run. You can see more in our updates.
I have worked up the initial geometry for the Drawbridge. You can see more in the updates for this one too.
Our current backers have shown lots of enthusiasm for the starfort. Here is the initial work for the parts that let you go from four to five sided forts. Check out our updates for additional parts that will let you do city walls as well!
Update 16 gives some more details, but here is a look at the shore battery mock ups.
Several of you have asked how long it would take to print the fort and how much it would cost to print. The table below lays out what you would need to print to make the fort as shown in the pictures above.
Risks and challenges
QUALITY: While we will vouch for the quality of our 3D digital files, printing results can very greatly depending on the quality of the 3D printer used, the type of materials selected, the slicing software, and the selected settings. All of our models have been printed on the FlashForge Creator Pro 3D printer. We use Simplify 3D as our slicing tool and interface with the printer. I highly recommend both products. All the models shown have been done in ABS plastic with rafts and without supports. You will need to experiment with your equipment to find the optimal printing combination.
TIMELINESS: The files for the Basic Fort are nearing completion. I will hold off on finalizing them, as I am certain to receive helpful feedback during the campaign. So there should be NO issues receiving the base set of files. The content will be distributed through our Laserdreamworks.com web store which has a proven track record of delivering digital content. Stretch goals will take some development time, and obviously the better the campaign does, the more time we will need. Fortunately, nothing prevents releasing files as they are created and proofed.
Trustworthiness: Laser Dream Works has been delivering quality game products and support to our customers since 2011. This is our second kickstarter campaign. Our first project - Run Out the Guns! -was successfully funded and fulfilled. We are committed to continuing that record of success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
