F(r)iction is a love letter to storytelling. Printed tri-annually by Tethered by Letters—and distributed around the world—this collection aims to bring you the very best in contemporary literature and art.

Each issue features outstanding writing of all genres, a graphic short story, a community partner feature, and an author spotlight. Printed in full color on high quality paper, every story and poem is accompanied by custom illustrations, making our collection as visually stunning as the writing within.

We've always been committed to publishing gorgeous literature and art, but as the threat to arts and humanities grows larger every day, we are more devoted than ever to the compilation of a truly unique creative collection.

Our Mission
F(r)iction’s parent company, Tethered by Letters (TBL), is a literary 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to helping writers realize their potential. Through our education, community, and publishing sectors, TBL works with emerging writers around the globe to cultivate their craft and help them launch successful creative careers.

Publish Weird
Unlike many publications, F(r)iction does not discriminate against genre, style, or origin. Although the literary world is expanding, a lot of journals still have set parameters for the work they publish—specific word counts and styles; certainly no sci-fi, horror, fantasy, or experimental works—ensuring that nothing too weird sneaks in.

At F(r)iction, we don't shy away from the weird. In fact, we embrace it. We seek the works that tear themselves out of their creators—convention be damned!—because they were just too good not to be written. Maybe that's a literary horror story; a 6-page epic poem, a creative nonfiction piece written from the perspective of an empty Guinness bottle.

As long as the work is excellent, any story can find a home in this strange beast of a journal...no matter how unconventional. Our mission? To #PublishWeird.

The Free Editing Program
To help achieve our nonprofit goals, F(r)iction has an intimate relationship with TBL’s largest and oldest education initiative: the Free Editing Program. This program pairs emerging writers with professional editors.

Working one-on-one through several drafts of a single story or poem, TBL’s Free Editing Program has helped hundreds of writers find publication—whether in the pages of F(r)iction or elsewhere.

In fact, about 30% of the work published in F(r)iction is workshopped through the Free Editing Program, and more often than not, these pieces tend to be some of our favorites.

Comics
In a world that largely undervalues comics as a “serious” form of storytelling, we say nay! Graphic stories can be just as powerful as prose, and we're going to prove it!

For every issue of F(r)iction, we seek emerging talent, usually discovering the best creators toiling at the edge of the internet—and we bring them to you, in full-glorious color. In 2015, we featured two Eisner-nominated stories: Noelle Stevenson’s “Nimona” and Emily Carroll’s “His Face All Red.” And in 2016, we featured work by Eisner-nominated artist Erin Mehlos, creator of Next Town Over.

Community Partnership
Each issue features works from one of our amazing humanitarian partners. These organizations use literature as a way to reshape and mend the lives of people whose voices need to be heard, and we could not be prouder to feature their work:

Custom Commissioned Art
Our stories are amazing, and we believe they should be presented to the reader in a form that is just as beautiful as the writing itself. Thus, we commission custom artwork for every single story and poem we publish.

Crazy, you say!

It is. But it’s worth it.

Pulling from our global team of emerging and established artists, we transform each story and poem into a full-blown visual experience.

This beautiful little book is bursting at the binding with adventurous, boundary-pushing work, but don't take our word for it...

And this new issue? Well, let's just say...we've hit the jackpot.

Exploring the theme of "cosmic luck," F(r)iction #7 confronts a monstrous clocktower with a tug on its townspeople, follows a hopeless romantic on a journey through the stars, and reveals what life would be like if you were married to a ghost. Joined by stellar celebrity talent—including original work from Maggie Smith and Kathy Fish—this issue also features writing from several emerging authors!

In these pages, you'll find poetry about mutant DNA, a recounting of adventures in Japan, a riveting tale about life at a fast food restaurant. This book will introduce you to visceral linguistic landscapes, ponder the fate of a struggling mother. F(r)iction #7 will entrance you with breathtaking artwork and absolutely beautiful writing.

In the way of comics, this issue features "Hollow," an outrageously gorgeous short story about Ildri, a Huldra (a type of Scandinavian troll), and Ylva (a charming little shepherd). Written and illustrated by Lilly Higgs, this debut webcomic is teeming with lush imagery, enchanting dialogue, and lovely, mystical characters.

If that wasn't enough, we also have a super exclusive feature with BuzzFeed editor and novelist Doree Shafrir, author of the debut title Startup. Doree discusses her new book in an interview with our Editor-in-Chief. And because we couldn't possibly stop there, you'll also find a critical review and AN ENTIRE CHAPTER from Startup (due out in April 2017)!

Authors: Afghan Women's Writing Project, Steven Dunn, Kathy Fish, Jeannine Hall Gailey, Marina Hatsopoulos, Lilly Higgs, Andrew Jimenez, Dorian Karahalios, Jeff Landon, Andrew Lee, KC Mead-Brewer, Doree Shafrir, Maggie Smith, Natalia Theodoridou, Adam Tie, and Cora Walker.

Artists: Enrica Angiolini, Arthur Asa, Tyler Champion, Brian Demers, Carly Lyn Heath, Catherine La Pointe Vollmer, Michelle Lockamy, Alyssa Menold, Daniel Reneau.

Why a Kickstarter?

Readership Expansion
Although we love what we do, and we have a wonderful community of readers who love it, too...but we need to get this book into more hands.

Kickstarter is a wonderful way to involve all kinds of people—even those who may have never thought about reading a literary journal (or even heard of them!). We want these stories—this gorgeous, delicious artwork—to be seen and enjoyed by as many lit and art lovers as possible!

We want traditional literary readers to fall in love with some weird sci-fi, for comic-book fanatics to read a great poem and realize it's just as exciting as those colorful panels. We want to show that great storytelling has no limits, that serious work can have mainstream appeal, that great stories, no matter how weird, can still reshape the way we think—and entertain the hell out of us!

It's a strange mission, and it only works if we can get this book out there. Kickstarter is full of people looking for the next cool thing, and we hope you take a chance on us. Because, despite what that dude in gym class said ten years ago, we're cool—okay, okay—F(r)iction is cool. We still don't have hand-eye coordination, but we make a darn good journal.

Disclaimer: Kickstarter can't be used to raise charity funds. If you want to donate a ludicrous amount of money (always encouraged) to our 501(c)3 nonprofit for the tax deduction, holler at us. We'll be MORE THAN HAPPY to help...but Kickstarter can't raise funds directly for charity (they can only help us sell stuff).

Risks and challenges

Creating anything is hard, and publishing is no different. There are always unexpected issues—seriously, how many times CAN InDesign crash? Don't tell me, our printer has run out of binding glue...again? Wait, no, seriously? Customs ate our books? That doesn't even make sense?!?—but we've been at this for years, and we have a great team dedicated to putting out the biggest—and most bizarre—fires.

Even though we are a small nonprofit, we've never failed to deliver a high-quality product on deadline, and we sure aren't going to start now.

For F(r)iction #7, in particular (because that's why we are all here!), we've already received the galley of the issue (man, is it BEAUTIFUL), and we have no doubt every single copy will be stunning—the cover will be shiny. SHINY!

We budget a silly amount of time between the approval, printing, shipping, stocking, and distribution, so fret not. If you're brave enough to take a chance on this little beast of a book, you'll get it on-time and with some serious wow factor. Promise.
