The Wheels on the Bike is a creative spin on the song The Wheels on the Bus.  I love to bike and am a daily bike commuter.  I made up this version of the song when my daughter was a couple months old.  At that time I was dreaming of the days I would get on a bike with her.  Now those days are here and it is time to put the book out to share with others.  The book has a fill in the blank component that allows the reader to fill in a few blanks in the story to fit their individual family.  Three pages have fill in the blank lines, the first page says, "The ____ (girl, boy, or both) on the bike rides really fast ....., the second page says, "The _____ (mom, dad, or other care giver) on the bike says slow down _____ (your child/chidrens' names)" and the third page says, "The ____ (mom, dad, or other care giver) on the bike says ride with us ....... ."

I feel passionate about living life as locally and sustainably as possible.  I wanted this passion to translate into my book by writing, illustrating and printing it all locally.  I was very discouraged at first to not be able to find a board book company that printed within the United States.  The vast majority of board books are printed in China. I finally found the only company that prints board books, in New York. It is not local by any means but is in the United States and printing responsibly.

Since I am printing within the United States this is making the book cost extra.  Each book will cost $19.95 + shipping to me, then to you which will equal about $5.  I would like to get this book out to as many families as possible as I am passionate about little ones getting exposure to books early.  To do that I need help to cover the printing and shipping costs. I was able to do a trade with my illustrator friend, Jennifer Mercede, so I do not have that cost in this equation.

When I meet my goal of $3000 I can print 100 books and sell them at $19.95 each.  If I exceed my goal and raise $4000 I can sell each book for $17. If I raise $5000 I will print more board books at $15 or less.  The more I raise will make each book cost less so it can get to more families.

I am not going to be making a profit from this experience. I do plan on printing another version of this book in paperback for families with older children. I can print a paperback copy locally here in Portland, if I get enough requests.

Risks and challenges

My first possible challenge may be in the printing process although the company states they can fill my order in one week. I would like to get these books out to familiies by the middle of December and that may create a second challenge with the busy shipping season. I feel that these are going to be only minor challenges.
