Kickstarter Lab at XOXO

September 19 to 22 in the back of YU Contemporary

Kickstarter is thrilled to be back at XOXO! This year we're doing something bigger. It's called Kickstarter Lab! We hope you'll be a part of it. Kickstarter Lab will be in the back of YU Contemporary, right next to the cafe. Join us for demos, workshops, a live Kickstarter project, and conversations with some amazing successful project creators.

XOXO Makes A Book

In the spirit of XOXO, we’re running a project of our own: XOXO Makes A Book.

The book will be composed and funded entirely by XOXO participants – and designed, printed, and delivered right here at the festival. Backers get a page in the book for a photo, a story, a funny drawing – anything you want, as long as it fits on a 5x8 inch piece of paper. By Sunday, we'll have bound copies of the masterpiece we all had a hand in making. Can't wait to see what this thing looks like!

On Friday, September 20th participating creators will be hosting workshops in the Kickstarter Lab!

11:30 am – 12:30 pm

DIY Spectrometer

Transform your phone into a spectrometer! You'll build (and take home) a tool that lets you analyze the light spectrum of any object and light sources around you. It's the same technology that scientists are using to help identify contaminants and impurities in everything from wines to laundry detergents to the ocean. Join them! Supplies are limited so arrive early.

12:45 pm – 1:45 pm

The camera lucida is a simple optical drawing aid that lets you trace what you see, and the NeoLucida is the first portable one to be made in nearly a century. Bring a pencil and experience for yourself how the old masters made such accurate, lifelike drawings!

2:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Digital Materiality

Philip David Stearns is the artist behind Glitch Textiles, a Kickstarter project that took glitches in the logic of digital circuits and transformed them into beautiful blankets, textiles, and rugs. He'll be talking about the project and its development, and will give a brief process demonstration after the talk.

3:45 pm – 4:45 pm

BPOW!!! Battery Powered Orchestra Workshop

Portland-based Kickstarter creator Travis Feldman will teach you how to make your own playable synthesizer using solderless methods and a few pieces of highly adaptable hardware. No experience with electronics is necessary!

5:15 pm – 6:00 pm

Projecteo is a mini Instagram projector made by Ben Redford with Mint Digital, a product development studio. Ben will talk about the highs and lows of making Projecteo, and the experience of building physical stuff in the context of a very digital agency.

Thinking about starting a project? We’d love to hear about it! Kickstarter staff will be available to meet with you on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4pm. Sign up now!
