What inspired Projects of Earth?
The Voyager Golden Record sent earthly images, music, and audio into space so that far-off future life forms might understand something about our planet. Projects of Earth is of a parallel ethos: it’s a collection of creative works exploring our shared and individual experiences of life and culture on this pale blue dot. On the fortieth anniversary of the Voyager Golden Record’s launch into space, we’re inspired to reflect on what it’s like to live on Earth today. If you are too, we hope you’ll take part.
What types of projects are a good fit for Projects of Earth?
Projects that offer unique perspectives on humanity, culture, and life on Earth. You could make an exploratory photo series, a collection of unique recipes from around the world, a guide to birdsongs… or, you could simply make something inspired by the Voyager Golden Record itself. We encourage you to get creative, and take the prompt in whatever direction you like. Think of this as a showcase of human imagination — and

How will Projects of Earth be promoted?
Once your project is live, put it on our radar:
All Projects of Earth will be promoted on Kickstarter.com via a tag and badge (allow two business days for us to tag and badge your project once you email it to us). Select Projects of Earth will also be featured on this landing page and on our editorial and social media channels. Head here to
learn more about how we pick which projects to feature.
Why should I launch my Project of Earth between August 20 and September 5?
The project-launch window pays homage to the original Voyager launches, which took place on August 20 and September 5, 1977. Launch your Project of Earth in this window if you’d like to be officially included in the initiative.
How many days long can my Project of Earth be?
Your project of Earth can be live for anything from one to 60 days — whatever makes the most sense for you. (Most projects on Kickstarter last about 30 days.) Just be sure your project launches between August 20 and September 5.
If I was already planning to run a project around this time, can I participate? Do I need an invite to take part in Projects of Earth?
All Projects of Earth must creatively explore some facet of life on Earth, and must launch between August 20 and September 5. If your project meets these requirements, add Projects of Earth to your project title or short blurb, and email your project link to email@example.com. You do not need any special invite to participate. Like all projects on Kickstarter, however, your project will be subject to standard review processes before launch. Once you email it to us, we’ll also review your project to be sure it’s a fit with the initiative.
If I’m launching a project that starts before August 20 or after September 5, can it still be a Project of Earth?
Unfortunately no. All Projects of Earth must go live between August 20 and September 5. They can last any duration (up to 60 days) you like.
