Creativity is for everyone. That belief’s central to what we do here at Kickstarter — we want to make it easier for more people to connect and get involved in creative projects, big or small. And part of living up to that goal is making sure our website is for everyone, too.

Today, we’re happy to announce a new feature that makes Kickstarter even more accessible to our huge, global community. This community spans hundreds of nations and territories, all seven continents, countless languages, and individuals at all different levels of hearing. When a creator reaches out to that community to share a new idea, we want all those people to have access to what they’re saying. So we’ve added captioning and subtitles to videos, to make sure they can be understood by everyone who watches — whatever their language, and whatever their hearing level.

Take a look at the video above to see it at work! Notice that "CC" symbol in the upper-right corner, and in the player controls? Hover over the controls to bring up a list of caption tracks, and choose the one you need:

For creators, it’s just as simple. Whether you’re working with your main project video, an additional clip for your project page, or a video update, you can add as many tracks of captions or subtitles as you like — to make sure anyone who wants to get involved with your project can experience the whole thing. Just click in the editor to start captioning any video you've uploaded:

We're excited to see even more people connect and explore creativity — across languages, borders, and hearing levels alike!

Glad that you're finally doing this, wish it had been done years before. But, the bar at the bottom covers up the captions at the beginning, can this be fixed please? Thanks.

    2. Samuel Sandoval on April 6, 2015

Thanks David (guy who signed in the video). You rock!

GREAT. Your news adds positive energy to our mission - Inclusion of Quality Captioning Universally. Needed by mega-millions globally, for many good reasons. welcomes all, official non-profit, all volunteers. We don't have a Kickstarter project (not yet) but invite contributions. Cheers for access with quality CC for all media and live captioning for live events too. LS, CCAC president

P.S. one feature to mention for some others who may get stuck like we did a moment ago - using the CC button along the bottom of the video, one clicks on the language (not the "off" word) to start the captioning - really good short video that gets the message across! we're delighted (can you tell?:-) and will share with our many networks.

    5. Sheena McFeely on April 8, 2015

Fantastic work! We look forward to more and more videos being captioned/subtitled!

Cannot see languages available for captioning beyond the first few. The scroll bar disappears when I try to put my pointer there.

Julia — Are you using a recent browser version? If not, try updating, and see if that fixes it.

And Andrea — sorry for the belated response. We'll be working on some changes that'll solve that problem, but in the meantime, if you find the controls covering captions for too long, you can work around it by changing the video to full-screen, where they won't fight for real estate.

    19. Stephen Bush on May 14, 2015

Is there a way to upload a caption file for use?

    20. Dan Mirvish on May 15, 2015

Stephen, yes, you can upload .vtt files. There's a bunch of websites out there explaining how to do it - you don't need to buy any software, btw. And once you've got your subtitles in Excel, then adding languages is easy. Using GoogleTranslate, I just added English, Italian, Greek, German, French and, of course, Yiddish to my upcoming campaign video! Cool!

    21. Clyde Snodgrass on May 21, 2015

You used Excel to format your .VTT file?

Have a template I could look at?

I used Notepad and saved as Unicode (.VTT extension) and I have it formatted right - I can't get it to import.

Just some friendly advice, spend the $5 and have someone from Fiverr translate it for you. Google translate doesn't do a spectacular job and a lot of the translation is broken up and incorrect.

    22. Bob Moyer (aka Peeky) on June 22, 2015

'elp, 'elp...this is great for my video. I appreciate the time taken to help us. At the end of this, I am sharing a link, that goes into probably more detail than most would like.

But here is what I need help on. My campaign is in English. How do I go about translating the various parts of the campaign into Spanish? Or captioning the text?

    23. ROCKFISH Games on July 31, 2015

What a great feature ! Thanks a lot ! One Question, currently planning a submission, changing the Video from time to time. Creating subtitles, exporting them and trying to import them when the new Video is online...that does not work. Any Idea what went wrong ? Just exporting the subtitles i created and importing that file 5 minutes later. Thanks, C

    24. Coline Pannier on August 18, 2015

I am having the same issue as Rockfish Games: I tried importing .vtt files but so far no luck. The page says "importing..." indefinitely. I tried importing the same file to the same video on Youtube and it worked fine, so the problem must be coming from the import feature.

    25. Monica Paolillo on August 21, 2015

It'd be good if the subtitles followed international subtitling standards though. No matter how great a subtitle looks or how good a translation may be, it'll be completely worthless and a total waste of time if nobody can actually get to read it. Exposure times, speech rhythm and reading speed are things you do need to take into account. For professional subtitling, feel free to check

    26. Eric Negron on August 27, 2015

If you need help with translations you can try

    27. Fatima Hye on September 15, 2015

So I have an issue where one one browser, when I play the video I made (with subtitles), it works fine (I can turn on/off the CC). However, in another browser (yes, it is outdated) having it captioned just blocks the entire video (I hear the audio but only see black). What my worry is, is that if someone is using an older browser, they just won't know what's going on, so I am tempted just to remove the subtitles altogether. Any way to fix this so that even in an outdated browser, the option just doesn't show, but you can still see the video?

    28. The Darwin Sect on September 17, 2015

Why when you share the link on Facebook there is no possibilities to activate the subtitles ??? We speak french and we had english subtitles because the market is more english speaker but if when we shared the video into social network there is no subtitle it's a big problem for us. This little details will make us miss our goal may be !!!
