About this project

ZigZag City Guides was created to enrich the educational experience of travel for kids ages 5 and up. This project began as my graduate thesis project and now I want to make them available to kids. Each guide is a three-part kit that includes a deck of 20 city cards, a map and folder to hold a day's worth of cards. I researched, prototyped and tested the content in each guide.

Recognizing that there are virtually no travel guides for school-age children, ZigZag City Guides provides them with the educational resources they need to connect with the people and places they encounter. Inspired by early memories of traveling abroad as a child, I designed them to answer these questions: Beyond keeping them busy, how can we help kids truly engage in new places? How can we focus children’s fresh eyes on the world around them in a way that creates lasting memories and lifetime learnings?

The guides allow parents and kids to explore together, make learning fun and travel experiences stick. They're also a vehicle for learning at home and in a classroom setting.

During my research, I met with dozens of families and teachers to get feedback on prototypes and content. I wanted to be sure that the guides helped kids get excited about traveling with their family, encouraged them to learn about a culture unfamiliar to them, and provoked them to use their imagination while exploring.

One of the best things about this is that is not available in digital form. Parents want to be disconnected while on vacation — to spend time with the family, not with their technology.

Your backing will go toward the $6500 I need to print the first set of the ZigZag City Guide to Rome. Please note that the final pop-up map and other design elements may differ from prototype shown here.

**Update** The publisher of ABC City Guides has offered to send out a set of 5 ABC City Guides for Kids books to anyone who makes a pledge of $150 or more to help fund this project.
