In honor of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's 50th Anniversary and all 150 million acres, of our 553 national wildlife refuges.
ARCTIC SANCTUARY
Thank you for clicking on our project!! We are an awesome group of youth volunteers that help out in a big way, over 1,500 hours this year. We want to learn, lend a hand, make a difference, and we think we do. We take on projects that are relevant to what we know, believe in, and what we want to learn and share with others. A museum is the perfect place for a curious and fun group of teens to make our mark.
The Bruce Museum's upcoming March 5, 2011 to May 29, 2011 exhibition, Arctic Sanctuary: Images of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, consisting of photographs by Jeff Jones, will be funded by the Bruce Museum Youth Committee. Through Jeff Jones' photography, we are hoping to raise awareness for The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's 50th Anniversary and for protecting all National Wildlife Refuges. It is especially important to have young people involved in this project because National Wildlife Refuges are a gift to us and our future generations.
On December 6, 1960, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was established for the purpose of "preserving unique wildlife, wilderness, and recreational values."
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge contains remote and undisturbed lands across five different ecological niche: lagoons, beaches and salt marshes of coastal marine areas; coastal plain tundra; alpine tundra of the Brooks Range; the forest-tundra transition south of the mountains; and tall spruce, birch, and aspen of the boreal forest. Guided by Jeff Jones’ vision, the Arctic Sanctuary photography exhibition offers a window to a world that is ecologically intact.
Jeff Jones' Arctic Sanctuary: Images of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge exhibition coincides with the 50th anniversary celebration of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. By collaborating with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Refuge’s managing federal agency, the Arctic Sanctuary exhibition will draw national attention to the Refuge while providing venues with additional opportunities for public education and outreach.
The Bruce Museum Youth Committee is a participating group in the Youth Inspired Challenge by the Association of Science Technology Centers (ASTC). This new national program has been spearheaded by President Obama’s goal to strengthen science, technology, engineering and mathematics in American education programs. The Youth Committee looks forward to funding this exhibition and hosting Jeff Jones’ photography collection in Greenwich, CT. Through this spectacular visual presentation, we hope to engage other museum youth volunteers, youth environmental groups, and our friends, as well as our teachers, wildlife biologists, environmental scholars, and local politicians to meet and discuss environmental issues that our generation is inheriting in a youth-friendly forum; the Bruce Museum Youth Committee’s sciCafe.
Our Mission and Goal:
Using Kickstarter, the Bruce Museum Youth Committee would like to raise money to help support this exhibition Arctic Sanctuary: Images of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Museum's Youth Committee successfully raised $4,600 that funded last year's Writing the Earth exhibition through a traditional direct mail campaign.
We are proud to be part of this exceptional photography exhibition honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Many of us are currently studying biology, marine biology, environmental science, photography and art in high school. This project, and the due diligence required to prepare for a museum exhibition, provides us, the Youth Committee, with an engaging experience that will light up our college and career resumes.
Our goal is to create awareness for protecting all of our National Wildlife Refuges, and raise enough money to cover the museum’s expenses, in order to support, promote and cover basic costs associated with the Arctic Sanctuary exhibition. Additional funds raised will go towards the Youth Committee program with ongoing projects such as iCreate the annual teen art show, the American Sign Language Program that produces video content for exhibitions, and future sciCafe lectures for youth.
