YOURS, ISABEL - a new play by Christy Hall has been invited to the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland.
1942. A world at war. A woman left behind.
Inspired by letters written during the early 1940s, YOURS, ISABEL tells the beautiful true story of World War II from the perspective of one woman left at home.
Isabel McMeniman is, in essence, a modern woman trapped in an era that cannot understand her. She likes to work, have her own money, and buy things for herself. She smokes, goes to dances without her boyfriend, and does a great deal of traveling alone at a time when this was unthinkable for young, respectable women. Even her relationship is unconventional. Isabel, a second-generation Irish Catholic finds herself writing to, and subsequently falling in love with, Nick D’Angelo, a second-generation Italian Protestant.
Isabel longs to be what she’s told she should be. Society, her family, and even Nick expect Isabel to be submissive, dutiful, and stay at home. Isabel, however, is constantly torn between these attributes typical of a 1940s woman, and who she is at her core. She marries Nick, tries desperately to have children, bakes, and keeps herself as pretty as possible, but something is missing. Something deep inside her continues to long for more.
Nick, now her husband, is deployed to fight overseas, leaving Isabel no choice but to return to her childhood home to care for her ill father. As the United States pushes even further into a devastating world war, the women left behind are asked to leave their kitchens and step into the workforce, something Isabel wholeheartedly embraces. And for the first time, Isabel feels set free.
But what will happen to that freedom when the war ends, and Nick returns home?
The EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE is the biggest arts festival in the world and takes place every August for three weeks in Scotland’s capital city.
Every year thousands of performers take to a multitude of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters to everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, musicals, operas, music, exhibitions and events.
Playwright Christy Hall and actor Matt Lutz have come together to produce the WORLD PREMIERE production of YOURS, ISABEL at Edinburgh. But we need your help!
With your generous donation, we will have the funding we need to bring YOURS, ISABEL "across the pond."
