Here's a tyro's question. Do you have instructions on how to put the sculpture together?

      Jeff Lieberman on March 7

Hey Kester, Charles, and everyone else. Have you checked out update #8, and also Randy's blog with video? It seems that most problems are solved with checking the length of the plastic tubing and then lubricating the idler pulley — if anyone has tried these two things (the cord doesn't even need to be applied for checking these issues), and it hasn't solved the problem, please take some sort of documentation and send it over and I will continue to help debug!

My motor has appeared to die also. I just installed the sculpture and it worked for about 5 minutes and as I was putting away my tools, I noticed that it was no longer working.

I am also having a problem with the sculpture. It worked for about a day but now the motors isn't properly pulling the string anymore. Any advice on how to get it work again would be appreciated. Happy to provide a video or photos if that helps.

I found that scuffing up the idler pulley with something sharp (like the tip of one of the screws it came with) seemed to help the belt spin it.

damn, jeff, a response to my personal message would have been nice after not seeing you on for four days. now i gotta get it out in the open that i have a defective part. i'm hoping to get an answer soon. looks like i'm not the only one that has problems with the sculpture.

Help! I got this for my son as a birthday present last summer. He finally got it, installed it in his new home, and was thrilled. It ran around 3 hours, then died. How do I get him in touch with someone who can help him? He lives in Michigan, and I now live in Arkansas, so it would be best if he could speak to someone himself regarding this.

Have installed the Moore Pattern in my music studio and it looks wonderful. I was fascinated by the whole process, from design to gift, from Kickstarter funding to outsourcing of manufacturing, and finally a unique piece of art (and commerce!) on my wall. Grazie!

Hi Ian - Sorry that you're getting antsy — this is why I wrote out two months ago air shipping anyone that wanted theirs in a rush — shipping by sea is a slow process. Everything should be landing in the US shortly and I will ship as soon as possible. Hoping you are well!

Hi Markus (and everyone) - not an exact one; but the shipment has left and is on its way to me as we speak; it should arrive end of january and I will ship them from Boston as soon as I return from a trip out of town (early Feb) — thanks for everyone's patience!

Hello, in response to selling more I say go for it. If people want them and you get paid then that seems ideal. I wondered if it was possible to make the power cord white, just to help the whole thing blend into the wall nicely. I am assuming people with black walls are rare :)

Looking forward to gazing into it

In response to your question from the email about whether to make more past the original 250, I say go for it. If someone wants one and is able to purchase, I see no good reason to deny them the pleasure just for exclusivity's sake.

Hi cr33per - I think the switch is an easy addition if we can make it inline/clean, very low issues with failure there. Yes the motor cords will end up clear, as I mentioned, this is how the prototyping phase plays out :) If we end up with AC timing motors the nice thing is there's no wall wart large transformer to deal with.. so should be easier to keep it all clean.

      Best- Jeff

    31. Beartato-kiteflying.thumb
      cr33per on July 12, 2011

      In regards to the switch:
Jeff, do you feel strongly either way for some reason? (Thanks for the video/update btw). I guess adding a switch is just one more part with fail potential? I mean if the plug were hidden in an awkward space behind heavy furniture it _could_ be nice to have a switch.
I noticed the motor cords were orange but will end up clear like the original? I'm trying to think of how to make the power cord to the wall slug non-obvious once mounted but I guess that's more my problem once I get it :)

Matt - I'm glad to sign the ones that people want. There were a few people who wrote me the day it ended and missed the deadline, I'd like to let them be a part of it as well so there will be a few more than 209, but glad to put the info on there. I was hoping that the machine would be thrown at Jeff's face and recorded at 1200 fps. We could see the outline of Jeff's face in the resulting breakup of the Moore Pattern machine like the water balloon segment on Time Warp. Nope! Didn't happen. What a ripoff!

      Stube -
As to your other question. It's best seen straight ahead, with a minimum of directional light.. ambient light is ideal for it, and if it's too high the effect will be minimized.

Jeff Lieberman on April 17, 2011

      Hi Stube -
The two rotating pieces are 12"x12", but overall, with the mounting piece, the size is 12" (width) x 20" (height). Thanks for asking!

Michael - It weighs probably 2 pounds, and comes with screws and plastic anchors to put into the wall. Most people won't need anything besides a screwdriver, but to really get it in there, a drill and the anchors will help... best-jeff

Hi Peter - The encompassing rectangle to hold the whole piece is 12" x 20". I would leave some more space around it for clearance, but that is the absolute minimum space the piece needs. Thanks for supporting!

Jeff Lieberman on April 10, 2011

Hey everyone - thanks for the comments! Responses below....

Euan: Basically yes. The one uncertain thing here is that it will either be an AC (220->110) or DC adapter; I haven't found the perfect final motor yet so I don't know which it will be. But either way, an adapter should do the trick.

Tasseophile: Thanks for the feedback — I understand your point. Since I had already designed the piece, I wanted to show people what it would be like without a major redesign, so this is how it will be made this time around; I have already sketched out a bevel gear design similar to what you've discussed so in the future I might make something more along those lines. One thing you can do is use a really long urethane cord, to move the rest of the sculpture elements several feet away; If you order one I'm glad to help you set that up, it's cheap, I can probably even throw in a longer urethane cord for ya... in this way it'll even be nicer than the bevel design, because no power cord will have to run to it.

Michael: Yes, you could definitely mount it on some wood. If you make a rectangle that encompasses the whole piece, it's 20"x12", but if you wanted the minimal piece of wood, it would be 16"x8". Glad you like the deal na dhope you enjoy it!

Peter: This is actually why I'm spec-ing out a new AC timing motor, so that it will be basically silent. I haven't settled on a motor yet but I'd like it to be basically silent. If you order it and find it too loud, I'm glad to take a return on it, but unfortunately at the moment I don't have a final motor selection to show you video or anything like that of it...
