The farmer is a rugged, romantic character representing the American ideals of individualism and self-sufficiency.
The American Farmer Catalog project is to visually catalog farmers and ranchers throughout Texas. Rather than document farming from the lens of social comment, I prefer to photograph the individual as an icon of the American ideal; a model of self-sufficiency. The farmer is a rugged, romantic character, and I have specifically chosen small farmers for this project with the goal of creating a visual/cultural document of objects, portraits, landscapes and stories; a catalog.
A standalone website will be created to showcase the images and audio from the project.
The funding will be used to cover travel expenses, pay my assistant, and to design and host the project website.
Eventually, I would like to travel to all 50 states in order to better craft a broad cultural document on farmers; an American portrait.
First let's start with Texas.
