An international near-space balloon challenge aimed at inspiring adults and kids to reach for the stars.
Let's inspire the world and young future scientists with this Kickstarter project! Space is within anybody's reach.
Workshop 88, Chicago’s only suburban hackerspace, hosted a successful inaugural Hackerspaces in Space competition in 2010. Hackerspaces and ragtag groups from around the world participated by sending weather balloons with payloads into near space hoping to capture pictures of the Earth’s horizon.
This year, Hackerspaces in Space aims to expand participation by taking winning designs from the 2011 competition and making them available in kits to K-12 institutions for educational endeavors with near space weather balloons. Kits will be provided with instructions and guidelines so students can engineer their own balloon, launch and retrieve it and analyze data.
Funds raised from Kickstarter will help to fund the the first batch of educational kits to be given away in a random drawing to K-12 institutions in order to cultivate interest in private space exploration as well as to help market and expand the Hackerspaces in Space movement.
For every $300 we go over our funding goal, we will pledge 1 additional kit for K-12 schools.
