Update #17: A sneak preview in honor of Occupy Oakland...
Hello my lovelies,
The album is mastered. The artwork is mostly done. The liner notes are written. We're pondering the manufacturing and prepping for our release. And we'll be sending full albums ahead of the release date to our wonderful Kickstarter backers VERY SOON.
But in honor of the action on the streets of downtown Oakland today, I'm sharing the mastered, final version of my title track, I Wanna Work for You. I know many of you have felt what it's like to want a job -- badly. I wrote this literally seconds after hanging up from a job interview. Just sat down at the piano and let it pour out (thanks, muse).
The thing about our time is the abundant contrast and choice. Look, self-employment is tricky (and there are no unemployment benefits for us, even though I paid into the system for a LONG time). The freedom is exhilarating, though. In my view, a revitalized social contract ain't such a bad idea, and a plethora of tools such as Kickstarter and a new spirit of collectivism makes things like THIS VERY ALBUM possible. Wow. No matter your political persuasion (because I know not all of you agree, and I am cool with diversity), you have to rejoice at the possibilities that exist today. So yes, I'm grateful even for that crappy job interview. Now go out and make some news of your own!

Since 2004, Oakland, Calif.-based multilingual (French, Spanish, Portuguese, English) songwriter Alexa Weber Morales has made nine studio recordings, including two solo albums, Jazzmérica and Vagabundeo, and a solo EP, From Me To Yule. In 2010, her vocals graced the Grammy-nominated latin jazz album Bien! Bien!
A percussionist, dancer, pianist and tree-climber, Alexa writes about smoldering obsessions, resourceful outcasts, captured sinners and restless spirits. Her lead singing and lyric writing on Wayne Wallace's 2007 top-10 latin jazz date The Reckless Search for Beauty received wide acclaim (especially Use Me and Afro Blue).
Alexa’s 2004 debut, Jazzmérica, was produced by five-time Grammy nominee Wallace and boasts an all-star band including John Santos, Frank Martin (Stevie Wonder), Ricardo Peixoto (Claudia Villela), Edgardo Cambón, and many others.
Her second date, Vagabundeo (2007, Patois Records), again included a crack team, among them vocalist Kenny Washington, featured on the a cappella rendition of Calling You. Produced by Wallace and distributed worldwide via KOCH, the album received top-20 jazz radio play.
Alexa is a charismatic stage performer whose venues include Yoshi's, Santana Row, Jazz at Pearl's, many California festivals and shows in Austin, Las Vegas and Boston. She has opened for Lenny Williams (Tower of Power) and Average White Band.
