Ryan and Mandy have known each for over 10 years. They met in 1999 on a college travel abroad trip to Central America to study and do service work with sustainable community development organizations in the third world. After 8 years apart, they re-united in 2007, fell in love and embarked on a journey to transition their lives into sustainable community. This movie documents that story as well as what they learned along the way. Their story is all of our story.
Ryan is a professional photographer who attended the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and was trained by award winning photographer Rachel Balunsat. This professional photography eye and background has greatly influenced his style of cinematography. He also has over 15 years of experience in environmental advocacy work.
Mandy is a trained non-profit fundraising expert who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and coordinated thousands of volunteers for Habitat for Humanity. She has a knack for producing and networking and her background and passion has helped Within Reach raise the money it has.
The movie is still being edited, now includes some great animations and is finally converging on a really great highly-viewable finished work by summer.
For anyone in the Research Triangle Park (North Carolina) area who wants to see some clips of the latest cut of the movie and discussion with an Associate Producer (me) and editor Derek Rowe of EcoHouse at the Future of Community gathering tomorrow (Saturday) in Durham: http://www.FutureOfCommunity.org/
In the SF Bay Area? We'll do something similar in a couple weeks with Transition Albany (CA) and East Bay Cohousing - tune in to http://www.ebcoho.org/ for details.
Keep forgetting about this and when I check on it....not too much. Hoping to see it soon.
Yep, still waiting to get digital download!!! Has anyone seen the movie?
I wonder whatever happened with this. The last I heard was that there would be a screening in Berkeley in June 2011, and then silence...
Is that Buttermilk Falls?
Congratulations on getting all your funding!
This project will be funded on Saturday Dec 25, 3:00pm PST.
Thank you to everyone.
Let us plant dates even though those who plant them will never eat them. We must live by the love of what we will never see. . . . Such disciplined love is what has given prophets, revolutionaries, and saints the courage to die for the future they envisaged. They make their own... ...bodies the seed of their highest hope. - Rubem Alves
Looking forward to the movie! I believe that all of us can live like you speak about...close to nature...working WITH it, NOT against it! If we all are willing to live more simply, and focus on what EVERYONE needs, and not just what WE want, then it would be truly wonderful. I wish you all the
success in the world with your endeavors!
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT! I'm going into creative space retreat mode for a while now to work on editing the movie now that the we've funded this final edit! thank you thank you thank you!
this movie's gonna move us all! :)
Congratulations you guys! Looking forward to seeing it completed!
Best of luck to you both, can't wait to see the movie. I will try to add as I can in the upcoming year to continue your very worthwhile project
Yay! Congratulations! Once again, you jumped and a net appeared. Love, faith and admiration to you!
Very cool. Glad the goal was reached and then some. Can't wait to see the movie.
All I have to say about this is encapsulated in the late great Jimmy Durante.....

You did it!!!!!!! This is so great! Congrats. - Zev Paiss
thank you Adrian! naw....we'll EXCEED IT! :) hey...shouldn't we be paying you for using your music! well, what goes around comes around! :)
Looks like you're gonna make it! Woo-hoo! Happy to help.
@Julie: Thanks for your perspective...yes, this is the power of community!
@Diana: another interesting perspective, and a fear we worked hard to overcome...it worked!
I am flabbergasted! I can't believe you're going to make it! I mean I had faith and all, but after all the fundraising you've already done over the past year or two for this, when I saw the start of the campaign on December 1, I was like, "Yeah, good luck with that...." thinking your contacts were probably all tapped out, loss of momentum and everything. This is so very... wow!
ya'll are so almost there. wow. breathe in the community you've woven. THIS is power, at it's truest, most humble and most gratifying.
Beth Rowe! thank you for not only creating such a light filled and talented child, but for supporting him in his far reaching work!
I just tripled my pledge at the request of Derek! He didn't want anything for Christmas except the funding of your project! Merry Christmas! I'm in the process of setting up a PayPal account for his grandmother, she, too, wants to support the project. Good luck! It really looks like you're going to make your goal!
thank you for getting us over $22k Skyla and for the positive words! We are moving forward! THIS IS AMAZING COMMUNITY WORK! :)
I just doubled my pledge and hope others can do the same. You guys are so close! The trailer looks great and I'm excited to be nearing the time when we all get to see the final work. Good luck over the next four days...
beautiful comments Christina and Joanna! we are WITHIN REACH!!! HANG IN THERE FOR THE FINAL PUSH YOU ALL! KEP SPREADING THE LINK AND GATHERING SUPPORTERS! Really emphasize the pre-order of the DVD in your sharing. :)
Can anyone here even LEND them the last $4k, or four people lend $1k each? so they can get over the hump of all-or nothing funding, and at least get the $21k so far pledged?
just a thought.
How badly do you each care about the future of our world? This film can enlighten millions of people about a new paradigm of sharing and concern for one another. What on this planet or in this universe can be greater than love? What better way to show your love for this film and its potential to change the way we view community, to bring us back to a genuine democracy and to move us forwards as a species than by doubling your pledge TODAY and getting them to their goal. Come on folks...I KNOW you have it in you. Please....reach deep and give more. Send out more emails and make this happen for Within Reach because we are now truly...within reach of making this happen on Christmas Day...
thank you Sandy! woohooooo for end of the year tax-deductible donations! yes we will be giving out tax deductible receipts to all who donate! :)
wonderful Jesse! thanks for leading the way! :)
I will DOUBLE my pledge if your goal has not been met by Christmas Eve. Please join me and do the same! Lets get this movie going!
Looks like a grewt project. My husband and I biked all over Indonesea before we had kids and then came home looking for community. We found it at Heartwood Cohousing. I upped my pledge to $500 in order to use up my charitable donation allowance so would like to have a reciept type thing for tax purposes. Thanks again, sandy
@Sheila - Wow! I'm so glad to be in touch with you, and hope to learn more about your journey toward sustainability when we have our consultation. Thanks for your support!
@Betsy - I'm laughing with joy at your comment. We were even donated a shirt on the journey from a woman at The Farm that read "The Hippies Were Right"...we'll be sure to include a photo of it in an upcoming Kickstarter udpate :)
@Raines - Thank you SO MUCH for your steady support. This project would definitely not have been possible without you.
Young folks like you give hope to old hippies like us. I'm forwarding your site to a bunch of friends. Can't wait to see the film!
Best Wishes!
I"m so inspired by this. My husband and I ride a tandem bicycle and hope to ride across the country after we retire in a few years. I love the idea of using the trip to explore and promote community. We are currently working with a group to form urban cohousing in Seattle (http://www.capitolhillurbancohousing.org).
I'd like to encourage you all to be sure to share this on your Facebook page and send it to your email list. I can see the number going up today from the blast that IC sent out. It'll take all of us to double today's number by Christmas. Yes we can!
I'd like to invite all KickStarter members and others who believe in the power of community to join me in investing in my friends Mandy and Ryan, a couple of the only people in the U.S. who have visited more intentional communities than I have over the past decade - and they did it over just the past couple of years, all while traveling over 6500 miles by bicycle while producing a documentary that they need a little help to finish. This movie will be a great tool for the movement to communicate the power of community, and for communities to use for outreach and education.
I was there riding with them in Healdsburg (CA) on the first day when they kicked it off by getting tattoos -- I thought they were crazy, but it turns out they were just crazy enough to accomplish the journey.
This campaign is only going for one more week, and they're halfway to their fundraising goal. Any pledge you make will only charge your card if and when they succeed, access to the film via download/DVD is a benefit of some very reasonable donation levels, and here's a kicker: give $100 and you get some community coaching from them that would cost you a bunch more if you hired me wearing my "Cohousing Coach" hat. Heck, pledging even a dollar gets you in the credits. Whether or not you can give, please tell a friend; if you've already contributed, an upgrade to the next level can make a big difference. Donations are tax-deductible through Fellowship for Intentional Community (FIC), which I volunteer on the board of. Just click that Green "Back this Project" button over on the right to make your holiday gift for the Earth - you won't regret it.
Brian, Mandy is tracking our pledges and she can help you figure out who pledged from your community. As for the rest of the pledges, it might be a good idea for your community to make a "communal" pledge together as that way it's more accurate who already pledged. We can't be certain who pledged as often people just pledge with their first name. Thanks so much! Ryan
Thank you Christopher! Love your project and so glad you promoted ours! thanks for the "pay it forward!" hope we do that too! :)
Hi Ryan: I just noted your comment back about the custom vid at the $500 level. There seems to be some interest at my community, but a question has come up on how to track that. I think the members of the community have pledged about $200 so far, but that is difficult to know. Any thoughts?
Hey Ryan!!! Best of luck, man! My son and I are proud to support your terrific film (and cause)! I sent the word out through my backer network for "The Price" and hope that perhaps others will feel the same way I do! Hang in there!!!
- Christopher
wonderful idea Joanna!
If everyone who has already contributed gave another 50 bucks...let's help them folks
thank you so much Saranagati!
Way to go! Besides pledging $25, I shared this with my 4,600+ Facebook friends today and I'll do it a couple more times before Dec. 26. Love, Peace and Joy for All Now.
Thank you Love, peace and beautiful bike rides! are dreams are definitely being fulfilled moment by moment! :) hope yours are too. :)
Keep working for love. Sounds like an amazing journey. So glad you're part of the intentional community movement as well. We hope your dreams are fulfilled. :)
Michel, thank you! that's a nice compliment...love you Canadians! :)
I'm very proud of you. You do a great job. Bonjour from Canada
Tom - we've completed the tour, AND we still use bicycles as our primary mode-of-transportation locally. Fortunately, we are those dorky cyclists who wear bright orange vests, have big flags and try really hard to be seen by cars, trucks etc. :) Thanks for your wish for us to be safe.
Brian - Thanks so much for pulling for us! I wanted to tell you that in addition to the rewards listed here, we are offering each of the 100 communities a customized video of your community if you collectively pledge at the $500 level. We'll use video we shot while visiting, as well as any photos or videos you should choose to give us, and this can be for any purpose - your website, a personal anthology of your history, anything you can imagine. Thanks again!
Thanks everybody for your heart-felt comments and support. William, I love what you said about our inherent need for community. It comes in SO MANY FORMS, and that is what our film hopes to communicate...you can create community right where you're at!
