We've launched an exciting new project of our own! Introducing the Kickstarter app for iPhone!

Funded! This project successfully raised its funding goal on December 7, 2011.

WOOHOO! We did it!! New Windowfarms parts will be made in the USA!

Update #5 · Dec 5, 2011 · 15 comments

We made the minimums for US production!!

You saw the vision with us. You told all your friends. We made it happen together.

Because of you we will be able to:

- Get more than 1,000 new folks growing food at home

- Support US manufacturing

- Innovate over time with production partners who are close at hand

- Create green jobs here at home

Please reach back and give yourself a pat on the back right now. Thank you. Really, thank you.

Very excited for you. Such a worthwhile project. Hopefully a company in Western Australia will be able to distribute them over here one day. Seems crazy to send one at a time by post. Looking forward to more updates. Congratulations to everyone involved.

I have to say that while I am anything but an America Firster, there are several reasons that I'm thrilled that these Windowfarms will be produced in the U.S. First, since the majority of pledges are from U.S. and Canadian residents, it will dramatically reduce the shipping burden compared to manufacturing in Asia (for example). Second, the U.S. history of outsourcing projects isn't a neutral one, where the U.S. loses manufacturing jobs, but Country X gains those jobs. Mostly, the U.S. loses unionized working and middle class jobs while Country X runs a factory that hires people at extremely low wages, without benefits and often under hazardous working conditions (so that we can get our 48 pack of socks from Walmart for $3.99). Even though I'm assuming that Windowfarms would be socially responsible about manufacturing done in another country, I think it might prove difficult to ensure adequate working conditions and such, without direct and ongoing access to production facilities. And, third, as Britta says, U.S. manufacture will allow more eco-friendly material streams, which seems as though it would be (or should be) a core value among Windowfarmers.

Guido, at this point I see 93 international backers, 305 US, and 475 US or Canada. Given that they are based in the US and would like to manufacture in their home country, perhaps they were trying to inspire their fellow citizens for a little extra help? It would be extremely difficult to do that internationally given they would still have to select one country. Honestly, I would be happy for someone in say France who was raising money to manufacture in their own country. Especially if it was a novel idea which I liked. I really don't understand the tone of resentment.

      Anyway, congratulations on your accomplishment!

Wow, Guido, way to be a party-pooper! You should be happy that they managed to avoid outsourcing. I mean, it wouldn't be quite right if this R&DIY-spirited project were produced in Country X to be shipped to Countries R, D, I, and Y, now would it? :P

With all due respect, I'm a backer that's not from the states... and I kind of don't like you guys cheering about how you managed to get US production in stead of country X. It's not just you guys that are in the crisis. We are too (and so is the rest of the world). We could use some more demand for our factories as well...

I can understand that it's your project, and you are happy about being able to do it in the states even though it costs 4 times as much... but please... don't rub it in...
