A feature-length documentary film about the colliding viewpoints and social issues raised by North Carolina's Amendment One.
On May 8th, 2012 the people of North Carolina voted overwhelmingly to affirm Amendment One to the state constitution. Amendment One defines marriage between one man and one woman as the ONLY legal union recognized by the state. It has come to be known more commonly as a ban on gay marriage, similar to legislation passed in more than 30 other states.
It outlaws any union between gay couples, not to mention domestic partnerships between straight couples too. Now, amidst an outpouring of emotional response from the rest of the country, North Carolina is the latest hotbed for an issue that will be faced by the entire nation, and eventually the world...
This is an explosive issue, and the time has come for understanding: understanding of the politics behind the issue, understanding of the opposing viewpoints, understanding of each other.
From producers Will Clegg and Lauren Schneider comes a new documentary aimed at starting this discussion. Before another state must endure the confusion and discord of the vote on same sex unions, let us discover together how and why this issue has become so charged.

A portion of the funding will go to Will and Lauren, who will travel to NC for two extended periods of time and make this film as their jobs, not as a hobby. We want to make this film for as little as possible, but need to keep the lights on back home! We will also hire a sound person to help us on location, and a composer to make an original soundtrack for the film. Will will provide most of the camera, lens and lighting equipment, but some of it just has to be rented or purchased, including some extra lights and a teleprompter (see Update #2 for explanation). We also need to make sure we have our legal bases covered, so we’ll need funds for legal advice, accounting, and licensing fees for archival footage.
Absolutely! $50,000 is the bare minimum that we need in order to do this documentary as a job and not a hobby. However, Kickstarter has fees and so does Amazon Payments (our payment processor) and this can add up to almost 10% of the money we raise. If we go above and beyond our goal, we will have more money for things like: rights and clearances for archival film and television clips, research assistance, film festival fees, reproduction of DVDs, and more. And the overall, the more money we raise, the longer we can spend in North Carolina in production.
Yes. We understand that some donors simply want to make sure that the story of marriage equality in NC is told. To give anonymously, click on "Back this Project." Then create a new Kickstarter account as "anonymous" or use a pseudonym. Amazon will ask for your personal financial information during the transaction, but that information will not be shared with either Kickstarter users or the creators of this project.
