WHY HORROR? is a documentary look at the psychology of horror around the world in order to understand why we love to be scared.
UPDATE (THURS NOV 5): As of 1:06 PM Eastern, Thursday, November 7th, we passed our $30,000 target on Kickstarter!!! THANK YOU to EVERYONE who has backed this film so far. But the clock is still ticking. If we can get to $35,000, we can extend our original travel plans (outlined below) to include Japan. Can we make it? Please help us reach our new stretch goal by Friday at 5 PM EST! Thanks again, everyone!
UPDATE (MON OCT 28): Just in time for Hallowe'en, we've added four brand new incentives, including some limited edition goodies, and along with them, three new reward levels to choose from.
You either love it or hate it ... but horror entertainment is truly a global phenomenon. If you’re reading this, chances are you count yourself among the millions of people who love it. We do!
But horror fans are often misunderstood. Tal Zimerman should know. He’s one of them.
Tal is a journalist for renowned horror publications and a full-fledged fan of everything deep, dark and disgusting. He’s on a journey to understand why he is disturbed by gruesome imagery showcased in the news, yet thrives on blood and guts found in movies, graphic novels, and video games. Why is he obsessed with horror? Why do we need it in our culture? What happens to us when we experience it? Why is horror so polarizing?
Tal meets with the genre’s leading filmmakers, writers, historians, psychologists, and sociologists to discover how horror looks in different cultures, why it’s so popular, and how it affects our minds.
This documentary aims to be the most comprehensive film ever assembled on the topic. We have an incredible line-up of horror experts on hand to talk. From legendary filmmakers to performers to authors, here is a list of people we’ve interviewed so far:
... as well as a number of accredited scholars, including sociologists, psychologists, historians, anthropologists, and, yes, even critics.
WHY HORROR? is a love letter to horror, a long-overdue appreciation for the genre that always gets short-changed by the industry.
This is a film for us, by us – the horror film fanatics – that we want to share with a broader audience. Casual horror fans will understand why they enjoy the genre – and why we, the horror lovers, are so passionate about it.
We want you to get involved and be a part of this experience: send us your thoughts for possible interviews, suggest an experiment our resident lab rat Tal can undergo, and most importantly, share this campaign with those in your circle.
We’re already in production but we need your help to take us to the finish line! Luckily, we’ve lined up some sweet rewards for any level that you’re able to contribute.
Any contributions we receive will go towards many areas including:
Your contributions allow us to buy the rights to the movies we want to use. (That clip of The Thing you just watched in the trailer above wasn’t free, and we need the rights and permission for many more films.)
To do this subject justice, and to get opinions from experts all over the world, we’re sending Tal on an international fact-finding mission. To properly document the horror phenomenon worldwide, we want to send Tal to the four corners of the earth—the US, the UK, Europe, Asia—to meet and interview the masters of horror.
Any funds raised beyond our initial request will go toward paying for some killer music, animations, and visual effects.
Remember, every dollar makes WHY HORROR? better. The final cost will be a lot more than what we are asking for but at this stage, any dollar helps!
We are counting on all of you savvy Internet citizens out there—from the horror devotees to the horror novices—to give us a hand (not literally) and help us make this documentary possible. Of course, we hope you’ll consider contributing to this exciting project and earn some of these exciting perks! (See the sidebar on the right for full details.)
But there are lots of additional ways you can help out and encourage others to contribute.
Post about WHY HORROR? on your favourite social media platform. Our personal faves are Facebook and Twitter ... Friendster, not so much. In fact, Like and Follow us for news and information, and send some of your fellow horror fans and film buffs our way.
If you belong to any horror forums or chat rooms, be the first to post about this exciting undertaking. Get your fellow Reddit users on board with us and join the WHY HORROR? community. And keep us in the loop ... we’d love to hear from you. We’ll be sure to keep you updated during this campaign, and long after, too!
Together, we can make this happen!
So who's assembling this ambitious project, anyway? Please allow us to introduce ourselves...

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There is no question whether or not this movie will get made ... we are 100% committed to following through to completion. What ensures this? Well, for one, we've been planning this film for a long time have already begun production with a firm schedule mapped out and a strict self-imposed deadline to deliver this film by Hallowe'en 2014.
As experienced filmmakers and producers, we know the importance of sticking to the timeframe we set out and of delivering the goods to the audience in a timely manner. There's nothing worse than sitting on a film for years. At some point, you have to pull the trigger and make it happen, and we did that months ago. Now that things are rolling along, it's time to turn to you to let you know what's happening, and how you can take an active role in being a part of this process.
As you read above, the amount of clips we can afford to use and the amount of travelling we're able to do are what will be affected by this Kickstarter campaign.
Our goal is to have this documentary reach as many people worldwide as possible. Taking our camera on the road and in the air will absolutely enhance this film and make it the best possible record of the horror genre around the world today.
