About this project
CHECK THE UPDATE PAGE! We have posted a preview video that more accurately portrays the style of video we would like to create.
[A small note on the video: By far, the three biggest areas we need to improve as far as equipment goes are sound recording, lighting, and tracking rig equipment. Please take that into consideration as you evaluate the shortcomings of the video.]
Ammar is a 10 (or more!) part video series written by Wes Sames (me!) and directed by Marc Davis. Marc and I are both Christians and students at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. We met on our freshman hall and became fast friends thanks to a mutual love of fitly-spoken words and artfully-shot cinema.
I originally had the idea for Ammar when I was taking my first Biblical Hebrew class. The title, "Ammar," comes from the biblical phase that means "He said." While I was studying Hebrew, there were times when I was moved to tears because of the raw beauty and power I found in the original language of the Bible. I once read a quote from T.S. Elliot, “The job of a writer is to turn blood into ink,’ and an accompanying statement that “The job of a preacher is to turn ink back into blood’… That is what I want this series to do for people.
I want to inspire a love of God’s word and provoke an appetite that only scripture can satisfy. I want to paint a picture of a bible that is not antiquated or irrelevant, but instead I want people to see the bible for it is: An awe-inspiring conversation with God. And I want to do all of this in contemporary, relatable, and easily understandable way.
That’s where we need your help:
If we were going to try to do all of this from scratch—buying all the equipment, paying a crew, paying an editor, and pursuing a publisher—This idea would probably cost upwards of $40,000.
But, because we have some of the equipment as well as volunteers, we only need $10,000 to purchase the rest of the equipment we need to make this project a reality.
Marc and I intend to make these videos of the highest quality we possibly can, and every single penny donated will go towards physical resources that will drastically improve the quality of what we can produce.
There’s been a lot of prayer over this project, so please pray and ask God if this project is something you want to support. And even if you can’t support us financially, please consider spreading the word about what we’re up to.

And finally, as in all things, to God alone be the Glory.
Thank you for your time and consideration,

While obviously the ideological focus of Ammar is to shed light on difficult issues and stimulate critical thinking about topics found in the bible, we want to create a visually beautiful experience. The Bible is communication: Communication is part of life, and life does not happen exclusively in a classroom or church. We want to create this videos in visually diverse environments--Museums, markets, chapels, coffee shops, parks, cities, rural areas, cathedrals, houses, and hospitals--and use those environments to compliment the exposition being presented in the dialogue or monologue. We plan to combine these diverse filming environments with images and shots that solidify the words being spoken to create visually, mentally, and emotionally stimulating videos. The plan for now is to have Wes do much of the talking in the videos, but, as the project evolves, we hope that other speakers will become involved as well. If we could pin down a particular genre for the series, we would probably have to say 'Expository, illumination documentary.' We want to be didactic, passionate, and critically faithful to the topics we'll be covering. Every video will be researched thoroughly: Ideally, the input of theologians and scholars from multiple disciplines and traditions will be incorporated into a holistic, faithful representation of the passage being discussed.
